Subject: wondering if 4.5 months is enough time?
Hi,
I am considering signing up for the "Denver Tri for the Cure" sprint triathlon the first week of August. I mountain bike, ski, and hike but am not a good swimmer or runner by any means. I think the biking should be easy, but am wondering if it is possible for someone who takes a short break after 2 laps and currently feels exhausted after a 1-mile run can work up to 1/2 mile swim and 3.1 mile run in addition to a bike by August?? Sorry for the long question, but wondering if it is realistic. I haven't challenged myself physically since high school and think it woudl feel great but don't want to be unrealistic! Thanks for any honest thoughts!

Yep. Plenty enough time to get you to the finish line of a sprint tri.
Follow the plan in the above link and let us know how you progress.
Slow down your running pace and focus on covering distance as opposed to speed for now.

Good luck!

Hi lkh,

Welcome! I agree with the others that you definitely have enough time to train. Only a few short months ago I could also barely run a mile, but last night I ran almost 3, which for me is a loooong way! I'm sure once you get started, you'll be amazed by your progress. Good luck!

Oh yea! I had been swimming recreationally for 3 months and decided to train for a sprint tri with 4.5 months of training (end of Jan. to end of May). I have progressed from swimming 200 meters to being able to swim 1000 meters, from 1 mile exhausted to 8 miles with a little energy left over. I did as you said have the biking down (I do the MS150 every year, but not competitively). It's really doable and I'm not really an athlete. As I said in my first post, I was a smoker and probably 20 lbs overweight. If you have any questions about my personal training plan feel free to email me.

Lanah,

If you follow the plans on this site and maintain a positive attitude not only will you be able to complete that tri but you will have fun doing it too. This site is a awesome tool to have use it as much as possible. Ask as many questions as you can. Go ahead and sign up. Hope to see you back here often logging your posts and asking questions.

Thanks all! I did sign up for it and started swimming, running, biking this week. Think i am going to go with the sprint swim focused training plan and do week 1 twice then dive in. Already feel good although pretty intimidated b/c i need to get up to snuff on each individual activity let alone all three together! I will be back here often i think! thanks!
