Subject: Cold Medicine Hallucinations?

I hate being sick.  And I hate being sick enough to be forced to take cold medicines.  After a completely sleepless night -- everytime I drifted off, I'd wake myself up snoring or "gurggling" (don't ask), I spent the better part of today on the couch staring at the boob-tube.  I took a "daytime" cold pill (1, not the recommended dose of 2).

Some of my "observations":

- cold medicine makes me feel about 3 steps behind -- stuff happens and then about a minute later I react

- the whole world seems to vibrate at some strange frequency

- daytime TV sucks, except for repeats of "Judging Amy" on TNT

- either I was hallucinating, or there is a commercial showing a VW Bug in a standoff with a Port-a-Potty

- no matter what time of day it is, "Law & Order" is on TV somewhere

- whey they say "8 hour medicine" they really mean 6.5 hours for the beneficial aspects and 12+ for the so-called side-effects

I have the same thing with cold and flu tablets and also sinus hayfever medication.  Its most probably the psuedoephedrine (not sure exactly how to spell that).

The 3 steps behind thing is the perfect description.  thats exactly what happens to me.  The strangest thing for me is that supposed non drowsy medication sends me right to sleep even day medication.

You haven't lived (died) until you've chug-a-lugged a half bottle of Vicks cough syrup on top of 3 pills from some leftover bottle of something with no label in the medicine cabinet. Expiration date? What expiration date? I'm talking a chemically induced hallucinogenic state of dancing in the mud at Woodstock. It's 1966 all over again baby!

Aawww Im sorry you're sick...Im a terrible patient and I hate taking all that stuff...

I always end up functioning worse when i take the cold and flu tablets but at least it makes me sleep (no matter whether its meant to or not). But for some reason once I wake up I always feel really vague and out of it for hours...Im convinced theres something evil in that stuff

Ugh, you haven't experienced Diabetic Tussin *hurl*. Imagine cough syrup, minus the sugar and the alcohol and any semblance of flavoring and add the consistency of spit.

I can't really take any cold stuff because of the drowsy effects. If I was to go hypoglycemic while on the meds, there's no way in hell they'd be able to wake me up to attempt to feed me and test my blood. I typically use Alka Seltzer Cold and Sinus (I LIIIIVEEE on that stuff). Tastes HORRIBLE but it works.

Incidentally, 1 Benedryl, tiny as they are, will put me out, stone cold, for 10 hrs. Guess how I'm spending my flight to Ireland?

Last year I was really sick, so I slammed threes shots of nyquil and took two sleepaids. I showed that cold, I slept through most of it.

Just a note to you all....if you are taking a decongestant or anything with psudophedrine in it...beware it will dehydrate you. So either take some time off until you get well (what I would do) or suffer and train with no medicine.

Yes, L&O is like CNN, always on. Yet, I prefer L&O to CSI anytime.

Cold medicines make me feel "floaty". Even the Tylenol Cold Daytime is billed as "non-drowsy", I would always feel sleepy after taking them. I took 2 pills at work once and I ended up having to crash on the couch for an hour in the lunch room.

I'm going to see how long I can go today without taking another sudafed.  I only take half the dosage because I'm so sensitive.

Incidentally, 1 Benedryl, tiny as they are, will put me out, stone cold, for 10 hrs. Guess how I'm spending my flight to Ireland?

Yeah, I keep some of those little yellow allergy pills in my night stand (chloro-tabs, or whatever they're called) -- the 4 hours pills are a perfect "sleep aid".  My mother used to threaten us with Benadryl when we were kids.  And in Germany, I hear, you can buy "knock out drops" for your kids.  Ever see that Sat Live Skit about Vallium for Kids?

Yeah, in my pre-sleep ramblings last night I asked my BF where all the water went.  I must have drank 3+ liters of water and iced tea, plus several bowls of soup, plus cereal, but yet I only peed three times all day yesterday.

Last year I was really sick, so I slammed threes shots of nyquil and took two sleepaids. I showed that cold, I slept through most of it.

I so wish I could sleep through this. Sudafed is a component of 'speed' which is why you can only buy it one box at a time from the drug store.  Why anyone would want to mix it with Drain-O I'll never know.  One table and my jaw is all clinched, my neck muscles are all tight, and I can't sleep to save my life.  I just lay in bed and talk to the cat.  But if I don't take the Sudafed, then I can't breathe at all through my nose, and that forces me to breathe through my mouth which makes my sore throat worse.  Grrr...

I suppose I'll 'crash' soon enough.

I actually really like L&O, but it's sad when you know the schedule.  Now I'm surfing the tv channels hoping to catch Will & Grace on.
