I've never seen the Sopranos show, but I remember him being a very good BAD guy in other films and shows. Early reports were Heart attack while visiting Italy.

Wow, just wow.  Gandolfini was excellent as Tony Soprano and pretty good in every roll I can remember.

Bummer. Sopranos was the only reason we had HBO back in the day. We would cancel the service between seasons... Haven't had HBO since.

Woke up to this news...so sad. He was a very talented actor - and one of the main reasons we watched the Sopranos.

I think what bugs me even more is he was only 51...only 4 years older than me...

Thoughts go out to his family.

This should be linked to the "Is obesity a disease?" thread.

He may have been genetically predisposed to heart disease but his lifestyle "choices" cannot have helped his long term prognosis.

Very sad. He apparently has a daughter that is less than a year old who will now never know her dad.

Nice. Is it unreasonable to wait until the autopsy's finished and he's in the ground before we start passing judgement?

I really liked his work. He did stuff before the Sapranos, but he really shined in that. I would watch anything he was in after that.

But by far his best work was when he did an HBO documentary on wounded soldiers. I was very hesitant to watch it because I thought wounded soldiers were going to be used to make some sort of "statement" at the time. But all it was was the human spirit triumphing over adversity. It was incredibly emotional and inspirational. Gandolphini was the Executive Producer and moderator, and he was absolutely perfect. It was nothing about him, he just asked the questions, and you could tell he had great respect for the subject. If you guys ever get the chance, watch it.

HBO Alive Day Memories.

Good article talking about the documentary and his death

Very sad. For those interested, this is his finest performance:

Sad. I sat next to him at a steakhouse in New York in 2006 after I'd just started working for the company for which I work now. He was very gracious to people who approached him and seemed like a genuinely nice guy from what I could see. And what a great actor. I dont recall disliking him in any of the roles he played. Even when he was the ahole general in The Last Castle I thought he did a great job.
