My Mom has Medicare but that is it. She would like additional health insurance. She will be moving in with us next month and will have more money for exciting stuff like health and life insurance. Any suggestions? I have no idea where to start.

Is she going to be on your taxes as a dependent? If so, can one of ya'll get her listed on insurance from work?

why does she need life insurance?  (at the point where you are moving in with your adult children, i'm assuming nobody is dependent on her income)

It sure would be nice if dealing with her death didn't put us in a great deal of debt.
She is 72, in OK health but has smoked for nearly 60 years. We hope she will be around for a while longer but I understand dealing with cremation and services can run in the thousands. She has almost no savings which is why she is moving in with us.

I'd look into this...I always see "dependent" care options from hubbies work...if nothing else there is a dependent care spending account option. I think that is made specifically for helping an elderly relative - at least it would be tax free! (I think...)

In addition to checking if she can be added as a dependent - if she is already on Medicare, she is eligible for Medicare Supplement insurance (basically - it gives a little more coverage than what just Medicare provides). Most of the major insurance companies offer Medicare Supplement insurance. Enrollment season is in the fourth quarter - so the timing should be just about right

There is a separate insurance package for Med Supp - for pharmaceuticals - called Part D...If your mom is on a lot of medication, it might be something to consider.

I work for one of the major suppliers of Medicare Supplement insurance, so I'm not going to name specific companies - but go to any insurance company's website and search for Med Supp (or Medicare Supplement) and you should get a good idea of what they offer.

Good luck!

Do NOT let her sign up for Humana Gold.   There are a lot of medicare knock offs out there right now.  They litterally wine and dine these people and sell thema  bill of goods. The BEST thing if she can afford it is to keep medicare and get a supplement to cover the 20% medicare doesn't cover.  She may be leligble for medicaid.  If she decides to go with a medicare knock off (They take her medicare benefits in return for insuring her) be VERY VERY careful.  Be SURE she can keep her doctors and know where she can or cannot go for care.  READ THE FINE PRINT.  Do NOT beleive the sales people they LIE.  They can make her drive 60-90 miles to see someone  "on their plan" or she is paying out of pocket.  I hate insurance companies

Yes look into medicare supplement insurance for her. There are some options that are zero premium and provide a decent amount of extra coverage.

As far as the life insurance that is most likely going to be prohibitively expensive at this point. 72 and smoking for 60 years is not a great combo for life insurance. There are however things called final expense policies that might fit your/her need. These usually require little to no medical evaluation to qualify for, obviously depends on what you are looking for but might work for you. Here is an example of such a program.

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.
