Subject: INJURY FORCES KASTOR OUT OF OLYMPIC TRIALS
Deena Kastor is hurt. She is not going to run. I am so bummed. I saw her at the Olympic Trials Marathon. She did so well ( 6th)

Deena Kastor's quest to make a fourth Olympic team came to an end yesterday when the 39 year-old Olympic Marathon bronze medalist decided that painful back spasms had caused her to miss so much training that being prepared for next Friday's 10,000m Olympic Trials race in Eugene, Ore., would be impossible. She admitted that she had been unable to run or even cross-train for the last two weeks.

"I was so excited with how everything was going," Kastor told Race Results Weekly in a telephone interview. She continued: "I need to be realistic about my prospects for running next week, and I don't think I'll be ready for it."

That is a terrible disappointment for her. She is a huge hero of mine.

Definitely too bad. Love her.

But, I am not sure she would have made the team with that field anyway. Glad she is making the right decision and focusing on getting better.

She probably wouldn't have ... but as you know she is never one to be underestimated, either.

I could take a page out of her book.

Couldn't we all!!!! Her age is particularly inspiring Wink

She and Amy train near where my parents live. I was hoping to nonchalantly run across them in my training runs and attempt to play it cool

That sucks about Deena. Love to watch her run.

Women's

1,500 - Uceny
Steeplechase - Coburn
5,000 - I really don't know who will win, but I'd love to see Fleshman be able to pull of the miracle and make the team, despite very little running.
10,000 - Flannagan

Men's

1,500 -  Lamong
Steeplechase -  No clue
5,000 - Lagat
10,000 - Rupp is the clear favorite, but he's also got an eye on the 5,000 so might not give it full effort. Keep an eye on Ritz.

This is going to be a fantastic meet! I'll be there for the first two days to watch the Eaton, Hardee, Clay smack down in the decathlon and also the 10,000 meters. I love getting back to Eugene to watch a good meet. Although I'm still bitter that the six years I lived there were mostly the dark years when Smith was UO coach, t&f was on the down slide in Eugene, and there wasn't much t&f to watch other than the Pre meet. I'm very envious of t&f fans who have lived in Eugene the last few years as it has re-established itself as Track Town. Anyway, I digress.

FPM: Are you going to double with the 1,500 and 5,000 at trials?

LL: Yes, the 5,000 comes first, so I'm putting all those eggs in one basket for that. But I have about two hours between the 5,000 and the heats of the 1,500, so I should be OK. I need to be able to focus on making the team in both those races. We're doubling though.

Sigh--I LIVE in Eugene in the summer, and I can't afford tickets to the Trials. But I do plan to do lots of running on the nearby streets and trails so I can "run into" all those elite athletes. (In Eugene, it's almost a given that if you're running, you'll be passed by someone running 5:XX a mile, but even more so when big meets come to town.) Subject: London 2012: Alan Webb trying to unlock his elusive talents
Another race and another disappointing finish. Alan Webb’s legs didn’t move as fast as they should have, and afterward, his explanation struggled to find a rhythm, as well.

“I just keep — it’s just not, it’s just not, it’s not clicking for me,” said one of the most unpredictable and confounding middle distance runners to ever lace up a pair of shoes. “I don’t know what else to say. .?.?. The race goes, I don’t, you know, it’s just as simple as that.”

For Djastroman...:

100-Meter Hurdles – Women
Lolo Jones, 29, is known as much for her compelling personal story (she grew up very poor and was homeless for a period as a child) as for her impressive hurdling abilities. She'll draw the most attention, but we think Beijing gold medalist Dawn Harper, 28, (pictured) rises to the occasion and wins the Trials. The U.S. is loaded in this event; we'll say Kellie Wells just edges Danielle Carruthers.

Our Picks:
1. Dawn Harper
2. Lolo Jones
3. Kellie Wells

Oh I have to go with LoLo too!  She has overcome so much after back surgery.  She looks primed and ready to redeem herself from Beijing.  I have to go with her determination to pull her for the win!

As much as I love Shalane I don't see her winning the 10K. She just tweeted that she had a workout yesterday so I'm guessing she isn't tapered and basically training through for the marathon. With her however one never knows.

One of the events I'm most excited about is the men's decathlon. We have to potential to have a LOADED team (possible medal sweep at the Olympics). Let's hope there are no issues with no heights, etc.

These are exciting times. Diving trials going on right now, swimming and track starting soon. Can't wait!!!!

I would head down to the stadium - last time people were giving away tickets (especially to the prelim sessions.) Who knows you may be able to grab some.

When I was there in 2008 I was running on Pre's Trail and Ryan Hall FLEW by me like I was standing still. He had already qualified in the marathon and was just doing appearances in Eugene so was in full training. It was insane.

Subject: Trials 10,000m: Ritz and the Bubble Contingent
Did you guys hear that Nathan Ritzenburg broke 13 for the 3 mile?”inquired my pal and teammate Bobby several weeks after Dathan Ritzenhein set the then-American record in the 5k. Rit'z 12:56.27 clocking in August of 2009 set the -admittedly small- world (of American distance running) on fire. And while Bobby's sense of humor relies heavily on intentional misrememberings of pseudo-celebrity names (“like how everyone has that one uncle that forgets names, ya know?”), nowadays, it would not be out of the realm of possibility for Ritzenhein's name to be botched by the moderate to serious track fan. Bobby's sardonic commentary on the pro running scene is now focused on the Gavin Rutt's, Craig Skolltinsky's, Karla Groucher's, and Sharlene Finnegan's on the circuit; poor Nathan is an afterthought these days.

Subject: Naperville's Derrick bullish on his Olympic chances
On the grounds of the Dish, a hilly public recreational area on the Stanford campus named for the radio telescope that crowns the site, signs urge users to beware of mountain lions.

Naperville's Chris Derrick found out how dangerous the animal life in the area can be.

The highly decorated runner, who received his degree in economics Sunday, always has been concerned about his finishing speed at the distances that are his specialty.

But Derrick, a leading contender for the 2012 Olympic team in the 10,000 meters, found the kick he needed to flee when he was chased from the Dish by ... a herd of cows.
