I live near SW marine drive and see cyclists using that route all the time...but part of it gets so narrow and it makes me nervous being so close to traffic (I have had a close call before)....any suggestions for biking routes (I am willing to drive a little bit to get there first if I must) that are either on wider stretches of road, or just less traffic?

Hey Jill, from you point you could do a nice loop out to Richmond/Ladner/Tsawassen area, it would all be pretty flat and nice riding. UBC is a nice loop too, not sure if it would be the length you're looking for though but you could make it longer by going onto the North Shore from there.

thanks again!!! UBC is too short - I am just a short jaunt from UBC now - I run to (and around)there through all the wonderful trails we have here.

I guess I will have to give richmond/ladner area a try....prefer not to ride downtown (that is where I was nearly sideswiped by a bus a few years ago).

I used to live downtown and know all about the joys! If you go along pacific and then into stanley park it's not too bad, then you can easily head over to the north shore and out to horseshoe bay.

If you're near UBC now then head over and do the Iona loop by the airport, lots of people do that one. If you still want more, then over to Richmond/Steveston.

x2 - I live @ Van / BBY border so it is out to Stanley Park - Jericho - UBC - Airport and back. Very nice ride, little traffic and wide roads.  Pitt Meadows / Maple Ridge is still the best overall area to ride for me anyways.

Hey, how often do you ride out to Pitt Meadows / Maple Ridge area? I haven't much lately but as the weather gets nicer that's where I do most of my riding. It's great coming from Port Moody.

I usually head East on the weekend like a Sunday morning and do around 100 - 150 KM, I go around UBC to the airport / Lulu Island during the week (about 1.5 hrs) I didn't get too much in the way of long rides in last year but with IM this year I'll be riding a lot more distance.  Sorry to hyjack your thread couch!!!

Take the Arthur Laing.

Jill, I live downtown and I'll be riding at UBC every Tuesday night in May. We could go for a ride sometime and I'd show you some routes.

Jeni took me on a ride to Iona a couple of weeks ago - so I know the way now....

but that would be great! I could only go on evening rides when my husband is in town (which is hit-and-miss with no predictable schedule)....but let me know when you start and I will see If I can join you!

Jill

If you go to Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge, you can ride with the Doc and me.  Mind you, the Doc is hardcore, so may not be into riding with us lowlies anymore.  She's nice enough that she may still indulge us, though.

Lots of great riding out there.  Riding across the PR Bridge is never particularly fun, however.

Are you questionning the hardcoreness of the doc? I don't think that's a wise idea.
