I enjoy calling friends and starting the conversation with a little prank. Whether it is the "is your refrigerator running? Well you should run after it," or calling your coworkers (while at work) saying you're sick and you're not coming in (to see if they are paying attention), it's always a hilarious gag.

So tell me your favourite prank phone call.

Mine's actually a phone message--it's the one where you record your message, and you say, "Hi! ... Hello? ... Uh, hello? I can't hear you, it's fuzzy ... hello? Can you hear me?"

My favourite prank call was calling my neighbour (when I was younger and living with my parents) who I knew to be a rather intolerant former Albertan and pretending to be a man taking a poll. At the time there was a big controversy about whether a Sikh RCMP officer should be forced to remove his turban to wear a hat like other Mounties.

The joke was that I put on my best Indian accent, and when he said that he believed that the Mountie should not be allowed to wear his turban, I launched into a tirade against him berating him for his intolerance.

Maybe it was funnier in the doing than the retelling...

Yep, and then when you actually answer the phone you do the same thing...

my husband calls my work all the time and makes up client names.  Such as "this is Captain James T Kirk and I have rock samples from Mars".  Or, "This is Mr. Shaggy of Boombastic REsources".

I'm a big fan of the prank answer.  Your phone rings, you pick it up, and "You've reached Tom. I'm sorry, I AM able to pick up the phone. At the tone please begin your message..."

They always pause for a long time before realizing they are actually on the line with someone

I answer the phone at my mum's house with a variety of different responses i.e:

"St Mary's Convent how can I help save your soul?"

"Dominoes Pizza can I take your order?"

"Battersea dogs home"

"Asylum for the criminally insane"

"Mum's house"

Yeah I know I'm hilarious ha ha . Well it makes mum laugh anyway

I like to pretend to be very hard of hearing when telemarketers call.

Make them repeat their whole spiel 4-5 times in little snippets

I had an outgoing message on my answering machine of: "Hello?.....Oh, hi.........uh-huh............yeah, well I'm not at home right now, this is my answering service. Leave a message at the beep".

Then a few weeks later, I changed the machine but for a while I answered the phone with the same script.

I also enjoy answering the phone with "What?" or "Speak."

When I was a young officer I always wanted to work at HQMC in DC so I could answer the phone "Marine Corps, what the f%$k do you want?

One of the best phone pranks I ever pulled was calling one of my favorite restaurants on a cell phone from my car with the window down and then beat my chest rapidly while informing them that I was in a news chopper covering a police chase in which the suspects were now loose in the vicinity. My wife was driving and the prankee was a dear friend of hers who was exremely blond. We cracked up as we drove into their parking lot to find her peering out the front door looking for all the action. Terry lives in Charleston now but occassionally calls to tell me to kiss her butt.

my telephone number used to end in 007, so for years I had the following dialogue clip from Goldfinger on my machine. It's the scene in which Connery as James Bond is waking up on Goldfinger's plane, and the first person he sees is Honor Blackman:

HONOR BLACKMAN
My Name is Galore

SEAN CONNERY
I must be dreaming
