Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok... this is possibly the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time... I am sitting at my desk, and a guy... no less than 350lbs is talking to the guy next to me and says this all in a row: "no matter what I do.. I just seem to gain weight" "I know i eat to much, but I cant seem to lose weight" "I'd walk 3-4 miles per day, and Id lose 5lbs... but then Id stop and it would all just come right back" "My metabolism must just be slow" Seriously... is it true? Has America lost all sense of rationality? |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() it appears so, a lot of people have the mentality that if they loose the weight once no matter what they do in the future it shouldn't come back. |

Slower Than You ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, yes they are that ignorant. Myself and my roommates did a non-scientific study back in college and concluded that 75% of the population is Too Stupid To Live, but are propped up by Society, and thus Darwin becomes impotent. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() People are not willing to work at losing weight. They want instant gratification. If they can't lose 10 lbs per week, then weight loss must be hard for them. It's all a part of the denial process, the "It's not my fault I'm fat" thing. I used to be one of these people, but I *knew* deep down what I had to do to lose weight. I just had to come to terms with it and my eating. It's sad really. Most folks who are that overweight never do get to that point. I'm one of the fortunate.

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Look at how we've grown up - Your child isn't overweight, he's "husky," "big boned," "big for his age" and on and on. We praise with food - "If you're good, I'll take you out for ice cream!" And we make eating a sensual experience, rather than break it down to simply eating to live (not that I think that we shouldn't enjoy our food...I love to eat). Also, aren't we the home of the Big Mac and the Supersize meal? My wife's uncle, who is born and bred European, just shakes his head, "Oh, you Americans," as he eats his normal breakfast of black coffee and toast with jam (no butter). We've lost track of what's healthy and acceptable. My advice? Buy stock in the companies that produce blood pressure/heart/cholesterol medications and you'll make a fortune. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Seriously... is it true? Has America lost all sense of rationality? I don't disagree with you, but they're just rationalizing. Very powerful human emotion. They know they're in the tank and they're just verbalizing some excuses that they know on some level are BS, but make them feel better. For EG, I'm virtually addicted to a 20 oz. Mountain Dew in the morning. I gave it up for lent. Went smooth. As Easter Sunday approached, I could hear the "addiction" talking in my head, working out all kinds of scenarios why I can/deserve/should have a few MDs again. Were I with another MD drinker, I'd probably say them out loud, despite how stupid they sound.

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I work in a hospital and many of the people that come in have problems that were lifestyle choices of some variety. Have you ever seen an amputee candidate for obesity and uncontrolled diabetes? There's a wake up call right there! Nearly all of those people are where they are because of thousands of poor choices. People tend to follow laws of motion too. A body at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an outside force. It's harder to exercise when your really overweight. A lot of these people are really self-conscious about their weight. I'll see a lot of ladies at the gym who put in good workouts, but don't look very fit. A lot of really big guys are working out in the pool or doing water aerobics. I take my hat off to 'em. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, they are. My MIL is like that. Just saw her last Sun and she is now even heavier yet she supposedly is exersizing on a regular basis. There is a problem though, she has convinced herself that if the food is "healthy" that she can eat as much as she wants and binges on it. Additionally, it takes alot of time (my experience indicates at least several months) of consistent intense exersize (I am not talking 20 minutes on liesure ride or walk) to get the metabolism going at a higher rate. Even then if you want to lose weight, you still have to control the calories.

It seems that there are more and more heavy children and teens. When I was a child and teen just 15-25 years ago, heavy children and teens were quite rare. When I look at a pack of teens and often children today, it does not look so rare anymore. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() what gets me is these are the people that will say,,, "i'm just big framed or big boned" please I've been in one manner or another of the radiology field for 20 some years. When I 'm looking at x-rays, CT's, MRI's [while there is actually an extremly small % like this] it's just not true.. I'm looking at a lot of excess body tissue on the apx same size bone structure as a thin person.. auugh !!!! there is nothing that gets me rolling my eyes more than a 5' 3" 280lb person claiming to be big boned.. Dude we don't have a needle long enough to get through all the fat to hit your bone.. Auuggh !! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Look at even our "weight loss" shows. The people on Biggest Loser (which i still love) lose 10 lbs a week and get madder than all hell at losing 4. I would LOVE to lose 4 consistantly. Like a previous poster said, everyone wants every thing right now, and no one wants to work for it. Sad. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wgraves7582 - 2008-03-25 2:30 PM Rant on! We have a friend whose daughter weighs 150lbs at 9 (maybe 10) years old. They let her eat whatever she wants and then go to the doctor scratching their heads about her weight. This girl will put down a full adult chicken finger meal at 9:30pm (yes pm!) and then have a Hot Fudge Sundae afterwards. I am 41 and in my worst days I would never dream of eating like that 1 hour before bed time (actually 9:30 is past my bed time so it would be a double whammy!) and they let her eat like that and cannot understand why her bloodpressure and weight is off the charts! It is like the cereal box lawsuit that the characters enticed the children to eat too much cereal and they got fat because of it so we can sue Kellogs and Post for making our kids fat! I understand genetics play a part in the whole deal, but we are also responsible for what we do with our bodies. Guys I work with eat half as much as I do and always comment that they would love to be able to eat like I do and not gain any weight. I give them my phone number and tell them to call me when they want me to pick them up for the gym or to let them know what time I am leaving on a 15+ mile training run or 30+ mile ride. Yes I am genetically gifted with a faster metabolism, but I would be fat if I ate like this and did nothing besides watch tv. We all would be. It is time for doctors to start taking responsibility for their patients and talking the truth to them and explaining to them what type of danger they are in if they continue to eat like they do, drink like they do, smoke like they do, and do no exercise at the end of the day! All this PC crap is way overboard. The truth hurts, but guess what - it is the truth. Rant Off! Good post...the only thing I'd like to comment on is the part in which you wrote that you are "genetically gifted with a faster metabolism". From my experience, metabolism is not a product of genetics; anybody can modify the relative "speed" of their metabolic rate by making some lifestyle changes--namely in the amount of exercise they do and the quality of food they eat. If you have an overweight person who does little or no exercise and eats poorly, he/she has "programmed" their metabolism to be incredibly slow. If that same person modifies his/her diet and exercise regime and begins to lose fat and gain muscle, this person will, in time, "re-program" their metabolism to burn at a higher rate. This person should notice that their metabolism burns at this higher rate so long as they continue on their new exercise and dietary regime. But, if they return to their old ways, their "slow metabolic burn" will eventually return as well. That's why it always makes me laugh when an overweight person says "I just have a slow metabolism". It's a copout; metabolic rate is about as easy to change as one's hairstyle. Edited by dogfacedgremlin34 2008-03-25 2:51 PM |

Cycling Guru![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Comment ....... There is no correlation that eating before bed gains weight. The only thing eating before going to bed has been shown to do is lead to more cases of indigestion in the middle of the night (mainly because you are lying down to digest instead of standing). Your stomach doesn't care if you are awake or asleep, it is still doing it's job. AND you still have 6 - 8 hours of digestion before you are eating again. To Ranger? Your co-worker is that ignorant ....... you are correct there. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rather than being angry about it, can we teach instead? As somebody who still has a little extra weight to get rid of from having been off for a few months, and who used to have more of it, I can't see this type of stuff without thinking that the anger is misplaced and could be hurtful to some of the true "Beginner triathletes" out there, and make them feel unwelcome. Yeah, it's hard to hear people justify and make excuses, but take your extra energy and put it into motivating and plain talk, not cut downs. I like what whoever said above about responding to stuff like that with "call me and we can go to the gym." We are facing an epidemic in this country, but it's going to take a lot of positive small steps to get us out of it. |

Cycling Guru![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Your digestion may slow down a bit, but whatever you put in your stomach will still be gone by the morning. Especially considering that you have more time between meals to digest things. Logically, would it makes sense that your stomach shuts down for the night when you go to sleep? Your heart doesn't, your mind doesn't, your digestive system doesn't. |
