Well, did you all go out and watch?

I missed the elites today because I had to work but JenG and I went out and watched the age groupers yesterday.  We cheered on our friend on the the run and I saw/cheered for the New Zealanders I met monday. Man, where the guys scary on their bikes going around Stanley Park.  3 abreast and passing on the tight left turn up to the roundabout in Stanley park.  There were so many people there was no way to enforce the no drafting rule. We watched for about and hour and 3 people hit the hay bales, HARD!

Yeah, I was out Sunday to watch both the elite men and women. Pretty awesome to see them all competing! I will definitely put up pics as soon I get them off my camera.

The women had an interesting race with Haskins (USA) and Tucker (GBR) riding away from the field and they opened up too big of a gap for anyone to catch them on the run. They were pretty much stride-for-stride the whole way until the last hundred metres or so. I feel bad for Kirsten Sweetland as she had so much hype about her doing so good at the world juniors and being a "hometown" race. She looked like she was limping on the run and afterwards as well....hope she's okay. Fernandes (POR and current #1) was pretty far back for most of the bike and run, not kicking it into high gear until the final lap, but it just wasn't enough to make up the time.

The men were crazy fast! The bike was just a huge pack for the lead, about 40-50 of them! Lots of jockeying for spots, but man can those guys move!! On the run they started out with a pack of maybe 10 guys for the first lap, then Gomez (ESP) made his move and put some distance on the pack. 3 more guys got a bit of a break including Docherty (NZL), but both Simon Whitfield and Paul Tichlaar stayed in the pack of 5-6. Gomez continued to put time on everyone and clearly won with almost 30sec on 2nd place.

That's my summary!!

That was fun. I wish we could have something like this in Vancouver every weekend. Unfortunately, I don't know if Vancouver will ever get another event like this after having to cancel the swim on Saturday.

My friends did well on Saturday. One friend was 26/81 in her AG (35-40) with a time of 2:18. Her best event is the bike, but she says she got passed about about 10 people in her AG on the run. My other friend was 9/76 in her AG (45-49) with a time of 2:17. She was first out of the water in her AG by about 50m.

I had a race yesterday in Abbotsford and our club organized it so I didn't get back into town in time to catch the women yesterday. I did catch the men with two laps to go on the bike and then saw the run. Those guys were flying. And Jeni, I got home so late, I didn't get to watch much of the race, so I didn't call, but I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get to watch at all.

yea the racing was great.

I heard the Sweetland injured her ankle. They tried to freeze it to stop the pain but it dident work so well. All in all the racing was awsome. It would have been cool if whitfield had won but that lean at the finish was pretty good he like fell over after to. My thoery is that Gomez and the other top 3 men are all peaking to early, and that whitfield is waiting for the olympics to peak.

I soooo wanted to catch some of this - but sadly - 4 kids, 1 mom (dad is away), 2 kids doctors/dentist appointments (including one kid being sedated for extractions)...and three birthday parties didn't leave me much time to do much of anything....dang it!

I did catch some of it on the live webcast but didn't make it downtown.  Too much housework to do and too tired to drag a 3 year old around in the cold and wet.  CBC will broadcast it next weekend if you want to tape (I'm old...  TiVo) it.

When do you find time to train?

It was cool to see these guys compete. If I had a chance to watch it again, I'd probably skip watching the swim in favor of staking out a spot just before the finish line. There looked like there were going to be a lot of good running battles, but none of the athletes were willing to drop the hammer at 500 meters out.

Another reason why Whitfield may have lost:

Whitfield came in 1st for the swim. Now look at Bevan Docherty's swim time, it was 20 seconds back. Going 20 seconds faster in 1500 meters takes a crapload more energy. Not only that, but it's likely Docherty was in a nice sweet draft spot too, where as Whitfield out in front isn't getting any draft. Even at the end of TR1, Docherty is 24 seconds back. Fast forward to the end of the bike, Docherty is 2 milliseconds back. In other words, getting out early in the swim is virtually pointless, the guys that came out of the water first can't escape the main chase pack.

haha - if you look at my logs you'll notice they are pretty blank on the weekends usually!  And notice my post on June 4th - life is really hectic right now!  Training time time is pretty scarce and sporadic unfortunately!

I know it must be hard with 4 kids to train because with 5 ages 13 to 17 months there is like no free time at all it is crazy
