Hammer 3/2 Full for $158.00. Is this a good wetsuit for the price for triathlons and general OWS? Felt good when I tried it on, want to do some OWS practice and need a wetsuit since water temp is 65 degrees in Atlantic off New England

Thanks for your help

I'm not familiar with that suit but it's probably OK for what you want to do with it but before you buy it I would look for a wetsuit specifically designed for triathlon swimming.  For about the same price you can get one that is better for swimming.  A wetsuit for swimming will fit like a second skin and be very stretchy in the arms and shoulders with thicker neoprene in the chest and legs for floatation.  They also have a  smooth surface for less drag and are easier to get off than a wetsuit made for surfing or scuba diving.

You should look at entry level suits from Zoot, Blue Seventy, Orca, 2XU, etc.

I think O'Neill is primarily for skiing not swimming, but I could be wrong.

I looked online and it seems the tri wetsuits are between $50-100+ more expensive. Do you think it would be a mistake to buy the O'Neill. I think it is more geared to surfing than primarily triathlon and don't know if that makes a huge difference. As a newbie a second or two doesn't matter to me, however 2 minutes would.

It fits very well, very tight, with good flex int eh arms and legs.

I have an O'Neill triathlon-specific suit and I would say it is an excellent buy for a newcomer. They are just hard to come by sometimes, that's all. They are significantly less expensive than other triathlon suits (although, like all other tri suits, they're more expensive than surfing suits).

If it fits and you are happy with the price, I say go for it. I've been very happy with mine. It's held up through seven triathlons and countless ocean OWS.

*****EDIT: The Hammer model is NOT one of O'Neill's tri-specific designs.

For $150, you can and should get a good tri-specific suit (probably used, but still).

Hammer, btw, is also selling on sierratradingpost.com for $40. Not that you should buy it for triathlons, but just FYI.

Do not wear a wetsuit in a triathlon unless it is specifically designed for swimming. You will tire out extremely quickly trying to swim any distance in a surfing or wakeboarding suit.

That may be a good price for that wetsuit, but if you're buying it for triathlon, it's money poorly spent.

Let me start by saying I do not own a wetsuit yet, bt there are failry inexpensive tri-specific suits for sale by F2R.  Check the clearance section.

Having completed my first sprint ditance tri in CT this weekend, and now formerly being addicted, I know I will be buying 1 in the near future.

What race are you preparing for?  Best of luck in the future.
