Ok...I really need some advice here. I am about to do my first Ironman at Ironman Florida in November. After 7 years of racing triathlon and losing 200lbs, I have spent the past year preparing for this race. My times are improving but my run continues to be very slow. My strategy of late is to do my bike split as quickly as I can so that I have a little more cushion of time on the run. I am quite concerned about making the 17 hour cut off.

My question is this: do you think that a plus size woman wearing an aero helmet and using zipp wheels on her bike is kind of ridiculous? Is this kinda like putting mag wheels on a Yugo? I have read in several triathlon magazines that an aero helmet can take as much as 10 minutes off your overall time on an Ironman Bike Split and that zipp wheels can also improve time. That extra time could be the difference between crossing the line at 16:59:59 and crossing at 17:10:00.

Now that I am just 3 months away from my race, I am trying to use every possible option to get me under the cut off. I have been training like I should now I am just looking for other possibilities.

Just don't want to look like a goofball on the course...any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

If you want to have Zipps and aero helmet go for it.

I have both and raced my IM with my Zipps but did not use my aero helmet. If you do not hold your head in the right position it may actually cause more drag. Most folks would be hard pressed to prove if it helped them or not so assumes it helped but do they really know? I train an race with power meter so know my power output, time and pace. I found I was putting out more power but was slower with my aero helmet than without. The conclusion was made that I probably hold my head slightly off so it was causing me more drag than help you.

Man, first, congrats on dumping the 200 extra lbs>

As far as the race mechanics, I tried to check your logs to see what speed you're carrying on the bike, but no luck....so I'm working off limited information.

But in general, 'buying speed' is a personal choice. Will an aero helmet make you faster?  Yes. Will Zipp wheels make you faster?  Yes (provided you're riding something inferior). How much faster?  We can't tell. What we do know is that the slower you are going, the less benefit there is.....and that's about where the facts end.

So to address your original question...is it rediculous?  I'd answer that the only person you need to answer to is you. Period. And if crossing in 17 is that very important, I think you're on solid ground with any decision you make to get yourself faster.

Well, if it's any concillation, I will be far behind you in the race and am starting to think that unfortunately, I won't be making the 17 hour cut-off. Pretty damn depressing.

I'm not sure what you mean by "do my bike as quickly as I can to save time on the run". But I would be very carfull with that strategy.  If you burn yourself out on the bike, and you will if you are pushing the whole time, you may just turn a 5.5-6 hour IM run and a finish into a 7 hour run and no finish.  As far as the wheels and everything else?  Buy them if it is inh your budget and enjoy them.  You have made incredible progress in your journey.  Congratulations.

I know exactly what you are talking about.  I'm not in the plus size, but i always hesitate to wear my helmet because i'm not in the top 10% of the field.  But you aren't going to see many of those people again anyway and i'm sure they will be to focused on themselves to care.  I'd say go for it.

If you just do the simple math....you make the bike cutoff and can continually walk the marathon (with a jog or 2 for good measure) and make it under 17hrs.

That's the beauty of the IM...anyone can do it as long as their legs aren't left on the bike course.

think about it...a 7 hour marathon...that's walking pace!!  great news huh?

Go for it!!

My only advice is to lean away from a disc wheel and go for the 404 set of Zipps. I have heard that a disc rode at a slower pace can actually make you slower with the added weight then a set of light weight wheels like the 404's. Also don't get caught up in the Zipp Trend. You can get "just as good" of wheel for cheaper prices.

Good Luck!!

You could always rent wheels for about $150 for the weekend instead of buying a set.

Yes if you make the bike cut off you can walk the run but need to be sort of quick about it and finish but running a few miles helps. My run split was 6:30 and I did my run/walk thing first 7-8 miles 4'/1' until my asthma kicked up and I had a hard time breathing. I'm not a fast walker. First 6 miles I was at 11:45 m/m pace.

Do what makes you feel more confident. Using race wheels seems to give most people a nice mental boost, and that extra confidence can help in terms of a little extra edge during the race. Do what makes you feel most confident, not what you think others expect of you.

When it comes to looking ridiculous most of us middle aged triathletes in our spandex skin suits have already jumped the shark Do whatever is going to make the race more enjoyable for you.

Have a look at the Louis Garneau Chrono as it is probably the most cost effective speed you can buy. It's reasonably aero, inexpensive, and has a short tail that should not slow you down when you are looking down. The short tail also makes it look less geeky. I will be wearing mine at the back of the pack in FL

x2 I would'nt blast the bike and end up having dead legs for the run to only walk the mary. Be conservative on the bike so this will give you the best chance for a sucessful mary.

Aero Helmets: Yes, they provide improved aerodynamic efficiency regardless of you head position or your pace. It's a function of the lack of ventilation holes as much as the shape. Aero helmets have been proven to be one of the least expensive forms of free speed.

Zipp Wheels: The advantage again is in as much their weight as their aerodynamic efficiency, but they are expensive. A cheaper option, and don't take this the wrong way as you have accomplished a lot, is to take weight off the rider.

Aero Helmets: Yes, they provide improved aerodynamic efficiency regardless of you head position....

That's not true for most aero helmets.  A helmet with a long hollow tail provides a large space for air to rush in as it passes over the sides of the helmet.  This has little to no effect if the helmet sits close to the rider's back, but a gap of a few inches can eliminate all advantage from the helmet's shape

Not so according to the MIT wind tunnel test they ran last year. Head position failed to negate the other structural advantages. Come on, this was an awesome thread on Slowtwitch last year!

Before even looking at the numbers I was going to say your head sits too heah to really take advantage of an aero helmet ..... then you turtled it in the last shot and it looked much better.

No, it was a different study done and I can't find the link. Rick, do you have it? And most guys in the Tour TT had aero helmets, at least what I saw of it.

  • ..and we have a new Aero Helmet discussion going on right now!

Anyone who's lost 200lbs should automatically be awarded a free aero helmet and wheels. Go for it, you've earned it.
