Subject: Is it wrong to do the breast stroke?

I am not a very good swimmer and I find myself going just as fast doing the breast stroke as I do when swimming free style. I also don't get as tired and I feel a lot more comfortable. I just want to know if it's okay to breast stroke when doing a mini triathlon?

 Thanks

You can do anything you want as long as you're propelling yourself. I've seen swimmers do breastroke, backstroke, elementary backstroke, doggy paddle, sidestroke, and some strokes that don't have names.

You can do breaststroke in a tri.  Pretty much anything that gets you through the swim.  The only problem with breast stroke is that it's more work with your legs than a lot of the other strokes.

FWIW....

I went into my first tri with the same plan....I did finish the swim, back stroke, FASTER than I had ever swam the breast in the pool and I payed for it when the run came around. (Think backstroke style making snow angels, so the same "kick" as the breast stroke.

If this is the only way you'll finish your first DO IT that way.  Just finish the first!!!!  It's VERY fun.  But keep working on the freestyle.  Now that is the only way I swim in the pool.  I force myself to keep working on it.

So yes you can swim that way to get it done but you'll probably work very hard to avoid doing it during your second as I am.

Good luck and have tons of fun like I did and will again.

Let me add to the chorus of "Do whatever gets you from the start to the finish"!

My first tri, I got through one lap of freestyle, managed to swallow half the pool, near panicked and then flipped over and backstroked the rest of it, no problem.

Have a great time!!

I've done two HIM swims doing mostly breast stroke as I was not a very strong swimmer when I started out.  As I have progressed I've gotten better and will only do it a few strokes to sight occassionally and the rest as freestyle.

Do whatever it takes to get you through the race, just be careful of others when you are kicking.  Nothing worse than getting a swift kick to the nutz from someone breast stroking as you are trying to pass.

Me too - oh wait, not the nutz part... My first tri was mostly backstroke. Anything that gets you to T1 !!

I think in the last thread you posted that I mentioned that yes, you could do any stroke you wanted, as long as it got you through the water. I wouldn't lie to ya

Every stroke is allowed in freestyle. But if you're going to breaststroke the entire event you may want to move to the side so faster swimmers don't get kicked in the head.

Just joined today, and in the 5 week count down to the first sprint tri.  Swimming scared the heck out of me!  This info has validated for me that , right now, the breast stroke is my way to go. My goal is to finish...without possible drowning.  Swam the first 36 lengths at the Y yesterday, comfortably.  I'm looking for minimal panic, minimal water intake, and sight- oh yeah, and I will stay off to the side so as NOT to impose injury on others!  Any other insight from tri newbies???

Definitely move to the side of the pack. Nothing worse than someone breaking into a breaststroke with others around. I would say learn to freestyle the whole event it's not that difficult.

If at all possible...Do an OWS BEFORE the race.  I didn't and freaked a bit.  I grew up swimming in open water and still do, but not competitively.  It's completely different.  Plus you're already a bit nervous.  I honestly was not but still 100yds in...freak time.   Just did the back stroke.

Just remember this...your goal is to FINISH...that said relax do whatever stroke you want and KNOW you are not going to drown.

Good luck and most of all enjoy it.

Thanks for the input...I am preparing for the worst and just being realistic about all to expect.  I will not have an opportunity for an OWS which I know will be a disadvantage.  Talking to as many people as possible and reading sure has helped with gathering all the "reality" of what's to come.  I am so grateful to have this opportunity to challenge myself mentally and physically-which makes everything(no matter what) WAY worth it!  I couldn't imagine going into this without the homework!

the other problem alot of non free style strokes is not only can you hit other people but it slows you down too. you move your arms to the side and you get stopped it will slow you down.
#1 rule of tris is get through the swim. After that any time you save is gravy.

Any stroke is fine, but do what has been suggested and move to the back and side. When most swimmers see someone doing a breaststoke, it's a good indication that they are either new to the sport, or don't consider their freestyle stroke strong enough. Most of the time you will be given plenty of room and people will swim around you (at least I do).

For some people it IS that difficult. I breast stroked all of my first THREE races, one of which was a half iron.

Two years later I'm going to KONA.

Do what you whatever is the most comfortable. Swimming freestyle in a race takes time

Good luck!

Thanks for the reassurance...I could not believe how difficult freestyle was for me- I gave it the valiant effort.  The amount of exertion and water intake(leading to frustration and panic) made me realize that I would not be realistic (given my training time frame)to choose this as my stroke for now.

With this, it has taken a lot of pressure off and has given me hope of conserving the energy needed to give it all in the remainder of the race!Cool

I'm in the same boat. I am very comfortable in the water for recreational things (i.e. scuba, snorkel, goofing off) but in a competitive atmosphere, I really struggle to swim effectively. I completed an olympic tri back in June using a combination of backstroke and side stroke. I found the breast stroke simply used too much leg and felt I would suffer on the bike and run because of it. I still haven't really mastered the freestyle but I intend to get there before next season using Total Immersion. I would just use whatever you're compfortable with and try to make it as efficient as possible. I really think the side stroke is good because you don't use up your legs like in a breast stroke. If you really focus on keeping a small profile in the water (i.e. streamlining your hands, timing your pull, etc.) I think this can be efficient and with your nose/mouth out of the water, breathing issues are non existent (other than an occasional splash in the mouth). I found I was faster than many folks doing an inefficient freestyle. Whenever I neede a break, I just did a backstroke. Sighting in backstroke is of course very difficult. I would try to use other swimmers to sight off of.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it but continue to work on the front crawl as it is definately a faster more efficient stroke.

If you wear a wetsuit, you may want to avoid the breaststroke.  Without one, I am a stronger breaststroker than crawler.  But wearing one absolutely destroys my breaststroke form (while at the same time improving the crawl).  I do breaststroke to sight, but do a modified version where I flutter kick (to avoid froggy-kicking an innocent bystander).

What a great thread to read!  I'm a 'closet breast stroker'.  Glad to hear that someone did a half ironman with breast stroke.  My breast stroke is actually faster than my front crawl.  I *am* working on my front crawl, though.  And it is definitely harder to breast stroke wearing a wet suit.

for your first couple of races I would let the wave go for about 10-20 seconds and then start swimming...

it allows them to spread out a bit if and when you catch up to some of them and it also allows you to start in a nice rhythm...

good luck...
