Seriously! Trying to keep my belly full is getting to be work. I know it's something a lot of people would like to complain about... but I'm tired of eating. Never though I would say that. But I am!

Today I have eaten:

1 breakfast sandwich
1 package of Pop Tarts
1/2 a donut
1 20 oz Gatorade
1 Amy's frozen meal (healthy one)
A few pieces of pineapple
3 - string cheese
2 slices of mixed cheese
6 crackers
1 smoothie (80 calories)
8 strawberries
1 small cheese quesadilla from Taco Cabana
1 luna bar

That's all and it's only 4:30 PM and I'm still hungry!

Yup, that sounds just about right.

I ate so much food during my training and still had a pretty tough time keeping the weight on and staying fueled for my workouts.

Anita Bean in "Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition" suggests that if your eating properly, it is not possible to take enough calories on board to offset what you burn in a hard day. (And even in some not so hard days of training)

You get full before you can consume that many calories. (Carb Dense foods tend to be bulky and fill you up)

I remember being so hungry waiting for dinner to arrive at our table (Out with Friends for dinner) that I almost started to gnaw on someone's arm. (Luckily the food came)

of course you're not full. you've got your metabolism in full force right now.  but besides that, nothing you ate would be filling at all for me either.  looks like sugar and cheese!

Looks like something I may eat, minus the pop tart, donut, string cheese, and crackers by 11 or 12 at the latest and that was for a half.

Why are you dieting?

My wife is just glad I'm not getting up at 3 am and eating my cottage cheese and berries to get me to my first breakfast. I can't sleep if I'm hungry, so I had a lot of middle of night frig raids.

I can't even imagine what's gonna happen next year during my first IM training year.

Good luck!

HA! You are right. Well, for what it's worth, I am vegetarian. Thus the lack of meat.

I certainly was always hungry during IM training BUT I also was careful about what I ate. Poptarts and donuts no, more fruit and veggies yes .
I wanted to start my race as lean as possible while still strong and got my body fat down to 5%, best way to make you bike lighter is to make yourself lighter I figured.

yeah... I eat quite a bit more than that, minus the sugary treats. But in reality, what you have listed really isn't that much. Throw in some protein and cleaner sources of food. Although to each his own.

Agreed - but it's a bit late now. Don't go changing your diet at this late stage. It's got you this far and your body or brain might just spit the dummy if you go get all healthy-like on it now.

1/2 a donut?!  You gotta be kidding me?!  I've never eaten half a donut in my life!  That does not look like that many calories Karen.

Yesterday  I ate:

coffee with creamer/sugar: 100
oatmeal with blueberries and a peach:  400
Bowl of tomatos with lite Italian: 100
Healthy Choise Steaner: 300
Oatmeal with BB: 400
2 Ham sandwiches: 600
Healthy Choice Steamer: 300
2 slices of cheese: 200
Bowl of shredded wheat: 300
2 cookies: 200
cup of Italian Ice: 200

I have food envy from all your entries. I have celiac and end up eating the same carbs over and over again. I do love my Quinoa & corn pasta and my gluten free pizza crusts. I'll play the game:
1st breakfast: 2 gluten free waffles (much like cardboard, but warm)
2nd post-run breakfast:
1 bowl of corn grits (with REAL butter and salt, mmmm)
2 egg whites, 1 whole egg
morning snack:
1 apple, 1 envirokids bar, several handfulls of yummy homemaid trail mix
2nd morning snack:
another apple
lunch:
a whole gluten free pizza (mmmm) with ham & mushrooms (1/4 of the crust has 70 calories )
afternoon snack:
1 bag microwave popcorn - I wouldn't even share w/ my poor kids
dinner:
2 servings corn & quinoa pasta w/ sauce, meat & cheese
3 gluten free cardboard (really, just bad) faux oreo cookies - but they taste choclatey so I had to have them!
This is my cut back calories b/c taper has begun, usually there is another lunch in there b/c of workouts but I have cut that out during taper.

WOW, after reading some of what you guys/gals are eating... I don't think I'm eating that much!

Yes, my diet is iffy. I'm a vegetarian who hates most vegetables... and tofu... go figure. I have never figured out how to eat healthy AND how to stay full.

What's funny is that I didn't think anyone would raise an eyebrow at what I consumed. HA! Although my coach would probably have a heart attack if he saw it.

But once the IM is done it's back to 1600 calories a day so I can get these few extra pounds off me. That's what is so frustrating... I'm hungry... so I eat... and I have gained weight and it isn't coming off. I tried to cut back some of my calories to get the pounds off and I ended up with 2 days of pounding headaches.

Anyways... this thread was about how all of us training for IM's are hungry all the time!!!!

I think what's important is the quality of the calories one consumes as much as the quantity. In any heavy training load, it's important to get enough calories but also the RIGHT calories. Calories from simple sugar found in PopTarts and donuts are empty calories which contribute nothing to your training or recovery. So I think in keeping the gist of what you are saying in this thread, it is crucial to fuel yourself properly with the proper form of fuel.

Ok, this is what Phelps eats in a day... I mean... it's not exactly HEALTHY or CLEAN...

Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes

Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Gary, you can tell people now, "Phelps drinks 2 energy drinks a day... so obviously it's good for you!"

I actually weigh 4-6 lbs less (depending on the day) than I did on IM race day and I'm training way less.  I ate a lot when I was IM training, but it was mostly carbs and very little protein- I pretty much ate what I wanted to because I knew I could burn off those cals.  Plus I was hungry all the time.  Next time I train for an IM I'm going to focus on taking in food that will serve as better "fuel" and try to increase my protein intake some- I think that will help keep me fuller.  But regardless- IM training gives you a crazy appetitie!!

Exactly, there is a miscoonception that just because you are training for an Ironman you can eat whatever you want. Not so. Phelps is a 23 year old WR swimmer, not a 30 or 40+ year old AG'er like the rest of us. Not a good comparison.

Off topic kind of, but I was a bit bummed to #1 hear what phelps eats, and #2 have that publicized. It raises the question Wow, what could he be doing if he were fueling his body properly? I would assume a world class atlete like that would have a team of coaches, nutritionists & doctors really watching that. I love the Triathlete Mag. issue on nutrition when the pro's talk about what they eat (o-k, some of that is b/c several are celiac too) - generally a vERY healthy bunch. Most were in IM training and eating much less than I expected.

I seem to always be hungry (except after a hard workout) and I've managed to not lose any weight, although I would love to, however, I'm not willing to cut out my treats to get there right now. This was yesterday's food.

Breakfast: clif bar, diet coke

2nd breakfast: blueberry oatmeal

lunch: chicfila sandwich on wheat, diet coke

Snack: graham crackers (4 sheets! normally it's just 2 with some peanut butter, but I'm out of pb at work)

Pre workout: little debbie oatmeal creme pie (170 calories)

During 2 hour ride (2 bottles of Gatorade G2 with 1/2 scoop carbo pro), 1 little debbie oatmeal creme pie

Dinner: 2 scrambled eggs, 2 pieces of high fiber toast with small pat of butter, 2 turkey sausage patties. 1 cup of skim milk.

No wonder you're hungry! You aren't eating nearly enough calorie dense, good carbohydrate and protien food. Graham cracker, little debbie whatevers are just sugar, scrambled eggs and a piece of toast is way light and turkey pattie sausages have hardly any protien and are mostly salt. Come on girl! Where are the fruits, veggies, lean protien, and carbs!

We've been trying to do the steamed veggie thing at dinner, but to be honest, this week it's been all about convenience. I do the little debbie thing during the bike and before swims cause they are way cheaper than gels and seem to sit ok on my stomach and are close to amt of calories I want (170 per)

By the time I was done with work and riding and changed, it was after 8:30 PM last night. The last thing I wanted to do was cook. But those are just excuses. I know it. I need to HTFU and eat better. Generally I feel like I do ok. I know I need to bring my lowfat cheese and triscuits back to work and my turkey slices.

Tonight we have on the agenda a 3000 m swim. I will probably just have water and the graham crackers before that, a G2 during that, and then for dinner is meatloaf with broccoli and canteloup. And a glass of skim milk again. I may have some vanilla yogurt later with blueberries.

My husband and I need a wife who will do all the cooking and meal prep for us!

OK, that dinner looks much better. The thing about cookies or the like vs. gels is that gels have a blend of sugar/carbohydrate that your body will use as fuel, cookies are just sugar. It's not about the calorie math. I would rather hear that you had a banana and an orange before a workout to give your glycogen a healthy spike.
