I know the phrase "best shape of my life" is very cliché but I think I'm very close to this right now.  I'll actually hit this point Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.  :-
I guess 'best shape' is subjective but to me it means I can run, bike and swim further and faster than at any other time of my life.  I'm not as lean as I was when I was 22 years old but I have more muscle mass than at any point in my life.  I don't know when I'll reach my 'peak' fitness as I'm still getting faster and developing more stamina but I'm thinking within a few years I'll reach my genetic potential.
So when do you expect to reach your peak physical fitness?

I'm pretty sure I was there in the latter half of '06, pre-injury, when Iwas at the lowest weight i've been since high school and set PRs at every distance I raced. Trying to get back there, post-injury, but at my age I have to wonder if the peak has been passed.

I would say it was October of '06, having completed 3 tris and a marathon.  Then I slacked off...

Hoping to surpass it next summer, assuming I survive HIM training.

I'm always optimistic that I haven't hit it yet...

EDIT -- Reminds me of a joke (oldie but a goodie):

"Have you lived here all your life?"

"Not yet."

Given the amount of time, effort, desire, and money that I can do now....

I think that 99.9% of all of us here need to add my caveat when discussing our genetic potential.

Back in 1988, at 22, I ran a 2:56 marathon. In 2006 I ran my first IM. I think I was in better shape in 1988, I think if I was into triahlons back then I could have done better.

Although I was putting in more training time when I did the IM, even though I was running 50 - 60 miles a week back in '88.

I think that I am as "Fit" now as I have ever been, not including my senior year of highschool. But even then, the comparison is Apples to Oranges.

I don't think I will ever hit my full potential.... as I think the more In shape you get, the higher your potential goes...

Right now, I actually am in the best shape of my life. I hope never to reach my potential though. If that happened, It would take away all the fun out of improving (which is the best part of this sport, in my opinion!).

In shape. Hmmmm. I can bench 2x (almost) my weight, I can deadlift 2.5X my weight and squat 2.5X my weight.

 I guess that's in shape.

I can run further, bike further, and swim further that ever.  However, in other ways I'm not neither as fit as when I was younger. Strength, speed, and flexability are some things off the top of my head.

I'm actually about 20 heavy than I was when I was playing volleyball all the time , and I really doubt that I could just jump up and grab a basketball rim with both hands pretty easy.
but I can go a long way swimming/biking/running

Well...I'd have to say that I'm in the best shape of my life right now, too. I'm at my lowest weight and BF%, and I'm running farther and faster than I have ever been able to before. I have more muscle definition than I've ever had...and I accomplished 3 major goals...completing a century ride, completing a sprint triathlon, and completing an olympic triathlon. As far as reaching my "peak potential"? Well...at age 42, I think I'm well beyond ever reaching that at this point in my life...but I'll keep trying to improve as long as my body allows me to.

I hope to be in the best shape of my life next year.  I've been overweight most of my life from about age 13 on with the exception of ages 15-18 (after an illness) and then again when from 23-24 (after a bad breakup).  I am now 42 and I've lost 35 pounds this year.  I have another 20-25 pounds that I want to lose but I think I've finally figured it out.  I'm hoping to reach my goal by the end of the year, just in time for my birthday next year.

I've never been athletic but I complete a sprint triathlon last year and another this year.  I'm signed up for two more, one in October and one in December.  Next year, my goal is to try an Olympic Distance.  That's why I think I'll be in the best shape next year.

I most likely can't do any of those but I can confidently say that I am in the best shape of my life.

OTOH, I’ll never be able to achieve my peak fitness level just because I can't devote all the time necessary to accomplish it but I am happy striving to become as good as I can within my life limitations.

I've been thinner or stronger at different times in my life but right now I am the most "fit" I've ever been. I hope to get even more fit over the next couple of years. This is my first year running triathlons at 34. Plan on keeping it going as long as possible.

I think I had that day in my early 20s. Sub 20 5k races were a regular thing. Now I am lucky if I get under 24. I suppose if I can lose enough weight to get back under sub 20 I could dabble with that question...until then I will pushing that rock up up up the hill.
