Subject: Race T-shirt

What do you all think about wearing the race t-shirt (assuming you pick up your race packet ahead of time) to the race?  I think its bad karma -- can't wear it until you earn it and that is after the race.  I saw plenty of people do this at the local sprint-tri I did last weekend.  Am I the only one who is superstitious like this?

And don't get me started on runners who wear their cotton race T-shirt during a running race...

I wore my race shirt once during a race - it was a nice long sleeved job and turned out to be perfect for the weather.  It was a trail 10K that turned into a 13K cause of missing course marshals.

Never.  Again.

Glad to hear its not just me.

I once tried on a race t-shirt before I did the race (didn't wear it, just tried it on), and I had a horrible race.  Yep, never again.  Now I know to respect the power of the shirt.

I would not do it before I at least completed the distance one time for a different race.  I have worn shirts after pick up around the house or to the store before a race but just because it was sitting out and I need a shirt to wear.  I really don't wear race shirts much unless they are dry fit and I use them to train.  Most of my cotton shirts are in a box waiting till I have the cash for an afgan.

Honestly, I couldn't care less if someone else wore the race t-shirt - frankly, I'm not even sure that I would notice it in the first place.  I just don't do it cause I'm superstitous about it now.

What does that stand for?

Never before I finish.

I have two shirts for a 5k that I signed up for but wasn't able to make. My buddy picked up my race packets (me and the wife) so I have the shirts. I refuse to wear them out of the house because I didn't do the race. They're great for sleeping in.

THe shirt should be worn post race, not before. However you can wear it at next years event.
ie 2008 T shirt at a 2009 race.
Karma will be on your side.

It's a SHIRT. Where it whenever and wherever the heck you want. Or don't. Who cares?

Obviously the person who asked the question originally, plus the dozen or so who responded. Including yourself.

Cool

Similar to wearing a band's shirt (AC/DC) to their concert.

In the words of James "Droz" Andrews from the movie PCU: "You're gonna wear the t-shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy."

I thought about it being bad luck so I don't wear it, it stays in the car. Same goes for runs etc. Don't get me wrong, I love a free t-shirt, that's why I went to college.

Bottom line, if you don't rate, DON'T even where the t-shirt!

I ran the Boulder Bolder 10K this year and there had to at least 5-10,000 people wearing the race shirt before and during the race. B I G  D E A L!!! It's not bad karma. Not wearing the shirt is just a stupid superstition among people who really should know better. It has nothing at all to do with being a newbie either. I've got friends who've been running or doing tris for many years who regularly wear the race shirt if they feel like it. I've done it myself a few times. I don't usually wear the shirts only because I won't wear cotton to race in and I like to wash my shirts before I wear them if they're a tech shirt.

Why be at all concerned with what other people wear at a race? If you don't want to wear the shirt, then don't.

funny thread...I just picked up my race packet for the Nike Human Race (10K) this weekend.  It came with a dry fit ($50 value) shirt with the race number printed on it...each shirt with it's own #'s http://www.nike.com/index.jhtml?l=nikestore&re=US&co=US&... .  Pretty impressive, everyone will be required to wear the shirt and there is over 12,000 people just in the LA race alone.

First time though wearing a race shirt during the actual race, but under the circumstances it might be pretty cool.
