Subject: What to wear, 70.3
After a dozen or so Olympics over the past two summers, I decided to end this season with a half.  I normally just wear a one-piece tri suit for Olympic events, but I'm contemplating whether it would be better to change into a bike jersey or running shirt for the half.  What do people normally wear for this distance?  As a first timer at this length I expect to be a back-of-packer and just learn from the experience, so an additional 20 seconds in each transition isn't a big deal.  Thank you for your thoughts.

Welcome to BT!

I would wear whatever it is that you feel most comfortable in.  In my first half I wore a one piece suit and my ......um ....... man bits moved around a lot and chafed quite a bit.  The next year I wore a two piece outfit that was a little more snug and applied some Body Glide as needed.  No issues.

I currently use my two piece tri suit for everything even all the way up to IM distance events with no issues.  That works for me, but as I said use whatever you are most comfortable with for the prescribed distance.

i wear two piece tri suit for all distances (sprint to 70.3). BTW - i like to wear sunscreen for the half iron so I put it on pretty liberally before the swim. i tried to do it once in transition, but ended up with a mess.

I'm a big fan of two piece (tri top and tri shorts) suit and have worn that up through HIM, but if you like the one piece trisuit, there's no reason not to wear it for your half. Only reason I can see to change or add anything for bike would be cold temps.

Make sure you get in the habit of wearing whatever you plan to wear for the race on at least some (read, "more than one") of your long (read, "longer than olympic distance") training rides.

Whatever's comfortable, biased toward the side of not changing if you don't need to.

And welcome to BT.

I am in the same boat and am trying to nail down what i will be wearing two weeks from now. I have a 50-55mile bike tomorrow and i will be going in my two-peice tri suit to double check and make sure i have no issues with comfort on the bike. If i do, then i will probably consider just changing to bike short and then running shorts in the transitions. I figure i can change pretty fast and wouldn't add more than 1-2 minutes total overall. Definately try whatever combo you want to do a couple times on the long bikes/runs to see how it feels

I have to agree with  JeepFleeb.  Wear what you usually do your events in.  I wore a jersey and tri shorts for my HIM this year.  Just make sure  you have something covering your nipples.  Wearing something that long and it  being wet, dry, wet, I found mine were really sore.

I don't know how helpful since I am chick but I am doing a half in 3 wks and my plan is 2 piece. I've been practicing in it too: tri shorts and tri tank. Zoot has nice options and they have been on sale at REI.

If I were a guy I would go sans tank for swim and then pull on a bike jersey for bike. Maybe toss it for run since the zipper can cause chaffing.

I would suggest practicing a mini tri before the race to test out clothing. It is just awful to have material be the thing you think about during a race. And if you are thinking about it it is because you are uncomfortable.
