Subject: What's the jellyfish situation at Sandy Point?

I was kicking around the idea of a little OWS at Sandy Point this weekend, and I was kinda curious what the jellyfish situation is like this time of year. I've got my Safe Sea ordered and on the way, but was just curious.

Or, if there's some other good OWS spot in the NE DC/B-more/Anne Arundel area I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

Down here in Calvert County I've been swimming in the bay in and haven't seen any jellyfish.  In the Patuxent River they are still pretty abundant but seem to be disappearing by the day.  This time of year (while they are declining) they are pretty patchy in their distribution.  I've seen good numbers of them in the Choptank and lower portions of the Chester River.  In the upper Chester River and upper parts of the Bay they are few and far between.

Get some Sea Safe, put on your wetsuit, and dive on in. They shouldn't be that bad this time of year. That's a relative statement, but it shouldn't be as bad as say a month ago.

Ah yes, the time-tested Theory of Jellyfishativity.

Yeah, that's kinda my plan, but being a complete OWS newbie I was curious about whether there was a jellyfish "season."

Yeah, there is a jellyfish season. It ramps up in July as the water gets nice and warm and then dies down as the water cools. Not sure when it's "over".

ETA: according to chesapeakebay.net:

Sea nettles are abundant from May through October as far north as Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, Maryland.

So Dr. Pete, did you do an ows?  I was looking on getting one done at Sandy's before I head home to Florida.  Any jellies?

No, the day I planned to do it ended up getting eaten up by a patient of mine who was having issues bigger than the jellies.

Friggin' sick people and their needing surgeries, with no respect for my Tri training....

(just in case anyone wants to rail on me for what a horrible person I am and missed the joke, that was a joke.)
