Subject: Mountain Bike?

Hey yall, first post.... I'm doing a triathlon next month and all I have is a mountain bike for a race that will take place on the road.  So my question is, how much of a difference is there between a road and mountain bike?  If i need to get a road bike,  how much money do they cost?  Thanks for the help!

There's a difference, mainly weight and aerodynamics, but my advice for your first one is go ahead and use the mountain bike.  You probably won't be the only one.  Downthe road, if you like tris, get a road or tri bike.

Good luck on your first!

Oh, and welcome to BT!

X2....

If you want to spend a little money you could get slick tires for your mountain bike... just a thought.

Definitely get slick tires for it. I pumped mine up about 10 over the recommended too. If you have suspension on your bike lock it and that will help. I did my first two tri's on a mountain bike. And it wasn't that bad. It's mostly about you and how hard you've trained. I passed people on road bikes and I got passed by road bikes, I passed people on mountain bikes and got passed by people on mountain bikes.

Get some toe clips for your pedals too. They'll help a ton.

Exactly right. And don't succumb to temptation and buy a lot of tri clothing. Just focus on the experience. You'll have plenty of time to blow money on expensive gear later!

Definately use the MTN bike for your first tri. I used my full suspension MTN bike with slick tyres for my first and as previous poster said was able to pass many people on road bikes. Go out there on the MTN bike and have fun, I know I did.

You should check the Race Site...cuz...the Organizator usually has a Fat Tire Division (Female and Male)...just in case you don't get a road bike in time...

Once you have enough money saved up (about $600 for an entry-level road bike), definitely get the road bike. A mountain bike will be perfectly fine for your first few triathlons (that is what I used), but a road bike definitely makes a HUGE difference in speed.

I remember that all the triathlons I did with a mountain bike, my average speed was 8 mph. After a summer of riding my bike a couple times a week, and buying a road bike, I got my speed up to 15 mph. Road bikes definitely make a difference!

My speed average on a MTN bike in my first tri was 18mph and I know others have done higher than that.
