Wait..... there's sharks in Hawaii??  In the ocean??  Who knew???

Ever seen the underwater footage of Kona.  No way a shark is going near that mess

Serious question: Aren't sharks attracted to thrashing? Isn't that what people say about surfers?

Not serious picture:

Remember, you don't have to be the fastest swimmer - just faster than a nice meaty looking one . . .

Sharks might be curious as to a single, thrashing animal in the water and investigate.  Not, as Aaron points out, 8,000 thrashing limbs, plus boats, jet skis, etc.  I've been in the water with sharks a whole bunch of times, and if you are anything but slow and deliberate, they will scoot the other way pronto.

Surfers don't thrash.  if you look from below, they present a profile that is similar to their main prey, sea lions.  Soild body, four limbs.

Seriously, we're not on the menu.  If we were, you would know it.

my coach suggested I carry a knife while doing an OWS, so I can stab the person next to me if I see a shark

All those people swimming in that bay had me scared, never mind the sharks! I did see a turtle way down deep, though.

Of course, you're still more likely to die in your car on the way to the ocean......
