Subject: Should I do a HIM next weekend?

This is my A-race for the year.  Entry fee has been paid since last winter and my hotel room is reserved.  However, I have been unable to train properly for it as I've been hampered by nagging fibrosis in my calfs and I've been super busy with work all summer.

I had decided to not even go, but at our local sprint (300yds/12miles/5k) last month I was inspired by the DFL finisher.  This lady, who was very heavy, and despite being urged to stop at T2 after over at least 2.5 hours on the course, insisited on finishing.  She walked the final 5k and FINISHED!

I can easily swim the 1.2 miles (1:10).  I'm sure I can ride 56 miles if I ride easy...real easy (4:20).  And I think I can walk 13.1 miles(4:00).  Total time = 9:30.  I will finish in perfect time to watch full Iron finishers.

My question... Should I do it, or should I skip it and build base for next year?

If you paid for it, I believe it is very unlikely that you will get a refund !!!

I understand that maybe without the proper training you will not feel "good" about doing the race, but honestly what do you have to lose ???

If anything you will get the experience of a HIM and then next year you train better to do better !!!

I say JUST DO IT !!! (LOL)

But remember, have fun and just try to finish it

That's a question only you can answer. But judging by your logs, it's not going to be pretty...

Is there a cut-off time for the HIM?

What she said^^^

Will doing a race over 9.5 hours help or hurt the recovery of your calf issue?

My vote is no. Doing a race like this with such minimal training and your estimated times is pointless. Even if there in no cutoff, you would likely be DFL by a couple hours. That's not really fair to the volunteers. Would could you possibly gain from doing this? Plus it could aggravate your condition and prevent you from training for an extended period. NO!

IMKS had an 8-hour cutoff, maybe check your athlete guide to see if this race has a cutoff as well. Having gone a full year now [as of Sep 1] with a nagging injury, my advice is to sit this one out and get healed the deuce up. It's worth it, it really is.

No problem with the cutoff.  It's a full and half, so I could watch finishers and help out if needed (Redman in OKC).  I do think there is some chance this could set me back, but even if it's a little I guess it's not worth it.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Try calling the RD. Explain your situation. If he/she says no refund, ask if you could volunteer this year... they may change their tune.

Take this time of year to bury yourself in training.  Come out next season hungry and ready to conquer.  It is my experience that injuries, the nagging type, tend to appear at the most inopportune time. The demands of a race will only set you back and adrenaline will mask most of the pain until you get to the run/walk.  Again, go volunteer, stay involved and come out in March-April 09 ready to smoke the courses.  Good Luck!

To quote your own signature:

"There are many things in Ironman that are beyond your control. Don't focus on these things. You have complete control of your attitude. This is what you need to focus on during an Ironman-keeping a good attitude.

I vote to do it but I always vote to do it. I do not think I ever been perpared enough and I raced injuried and I finish in under 9 hours every time.

I would only do it if your able to quit. If you allow yourself to say I had enough and I am out. If you can walk away from it then might as well go and see how far you can do. Knowing how tough a distance is makes you respect the distance more. I was thinking about doing only the swim of my him because I knew I could not bike.

I guess the question is it worth the cost of the hotel room. Would you be better off saving that money.

I respect my friend who went to do IMWI this year. There was no way she could finish the IM in the time but she tried and I give her alot of credit for going there knowing she will never make it.

If it was just an "in shape" issue, I would be tempted to do it.  I did one on a whim after 3 weeks completely off.

If there is a current injury AND lack of training?  It would be reckless for me to encourage you to go out there.

Or see if they can transfer it to the NEXT years race...  Never hurts to ask.

i was all set to say do it until I looked at your logs.....

that being said, it would be pretty cool to be on the course when the IMs speedies come flying by you and I think you are selling yourself a little short.  You should be able to walk a half mary in about 3:30

The issue has been decided for me...wife going out of town with kid #1 and kid #2 was to be hanging with grandma all weekend.  Grandma changed plans = huge hassle for wife.  So it's going to be just us guys this weekend.  We'll probably get a good 1 mile or even 1.2 mile bike ride in...he's 5

wheresmybike - I'm taking your approach and I've already started base building

arrondavidson - I stole the sig after making this post

everybody else - Thanks for the input.  Good Luck and Have Fun!
