I really need to step up and swim more regularly, but I'm scared of masters.  I'm a weak swimmer and virtually addicted to my pull buoy.  I'm afraid of how few laps I could manage without it.  Can someone describe how bad the worst swimmer is in their masters group?  Do people ever sit to the side and rest?  I know I could just go and watch at least, but I'm just can't motivate myself to deal with the embarrassment!  I think this goes back to some really bad swimming class memories from my childhood, on which I blame all my swimming insecurities.

As a side note, does anyone know/swim with MN Tri Masters?  Their web site is way out of date.  I'd like to join up with them, and I like Dave Cameron because of the TI stuff, but I haven't heard back from an e-mail I sent to him asking about it.

If there is any openings, the group in Hopkins is a great masters group.

It's too bad the Lakeville group is so far away.  They would be perfect for you.  Pretty laid back and easy paced but definetly a good work-out.  They usually swim about 2,000 yards in an hour work-out.

(I hope to someday be able to swim 2000 yards in an hour.)

I would still love it if someone could describe what it's like for a slow person during a masters swim session.

Bryan - where is the Lakeville group?  Lifetime or...  I'm desperate and willing drive, depending on the timing.

I go to the LiftTime fitness in Eagan and they have a Beginners Masters class.  I have only been swimming a couple months now and it is great for slow/inexperienced swimmers.  You might want to look into a Beginners Masters class near you.

It is not Lifetime.  It meets at Kenwood Trails elementary one night of the week and meets in Prior Lake middle school another night.  Pretty laid back.  Not sure if you would like the way it is run or not.  Phil or Chuck (identical twin brothers) lay out the schedule for the hour and you just kind of follow it.  Not a lot of instruction but the people are really nice.  If you want more perspective you should ask Becki (Teachertrek) she went a little more than I did last year.  There website is www.mnstorm.org

The slowest swimmers in my Masters class at LTF does 100's somewhere 2:30-3:00. I don't refer to these folks as bad swimmers, they just aren't as fast as the rest of us, nor do they have the time to put into it as some of the sr people in the class.

I can explain what Masters swim is like from a slow perspective. When I first started going to Masters I couldn't even complete the 300yd warmup! I kept going 2x week and each week I'd be able to complete more yds. It took me about 3 mo's before I was able to complete the full 2-2500 yd workout.

Believe me, if you start attending Masters, you WILL get faster, through stroke improvements and just plain better fitness. You'll get pushed pretty darn hard at times, but it's for your own good.

Don't worry about being slow. Your instructor and classmates won't worry about it, so neither should you.

Besides the masters swim sessions does anyone know of some good swim coaches for private lessons? I'm at half ironman swims but I've never had a lesson and I know that I need a lot of work with my stroke.

I'll have to drop in a few times during the winter doldrums.  Do they require consistent attendance, or is drop-in o.k.?

Have you ever done lessons with Dave? If so, how'd those go? Did you spend a TON of time on his drills?

To answer both Craig and Tom's question:  I did TI lessons (although not with Dave personally) and it was all drill oriented.  Craig, you might like it.  Take a personal lesson in a 6-pack to get the form down.    (http://www.ywcampls.org/healthfitness/aquatics/ti/index.asp)

I learned a lot in those and the leaps and bound of difference were worthwhile.  I also met two great BTers as we shared a lesson (my second time), so that was awesome.

I'm personally ready to just start swimming.  Not that drills aren't important, but I'm missing the next step.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone!  I am already feeling more confident in putting myself out there.

Wow.  Just called Lifetime Eagan and it's $34 a month for Masters swims, even if you're a member.   Same price for all.  I pay over $100/month for my f$(*%&$ membership, I'm not paying that.  Geesh.  At least if I did Hopkins masters I wouldn't have to drive as far and I'm contributing to my community.

I hear ya.

To put it in perspective, that $34 is the equivalent of one 30 min session with a personal trainer. For $34 a month I get 12 masters workouts per month...about $3 per hour. Cheapest training advice in the whole club.

Scott's group in Hopkins is good, forgot the price, haven't been there in a while  roughtly 30-40/month, I think.

Have also swam with MN Tri Masters / Dave Cameron.  It's different for me, I've swam the way I have for over 30 years, so to learn TI now is a bit tough.  Good group, will definitely get you going if you are fairly new to swimming or haven't swam competitively in the past. He charges like $10 a workout or a set price $__ for a package or month, forgot.

SCS Multisport has master swimming in Eden Prairie, have you checked out what they have.  nice pool.

The option at LTF is good depending on who's coaching.  I've done that as well with Michelle Carlson.  I think the price was in the price range mentioned and I think with that you have to get the USA Swimming for insurance.  Having it there is nice, because you can do a brick with a swim and bike or a swim and run in the winters.

All of these options have entry level to advance swim workouts, so you won't be over burden by the tough sets.

I asked about starting a Masters swim at Lakeville Lifetime.  When they finally started it they told me it would cost 35 bucks a person.  I just had to laugh at them.  I all ready pay you $120.00 a month and now you want $70 for Kelly and I to swim also?  No thanks.

Lane one (the slow lane) in Hopkins would be a good fit for any beginner. They take it easy, and you do not have to complete the whole workout.

If my shoulder was not completely hosed, I would still be swimming with them.

I can see your point. To cut the cost in half, you should let Kelly go to Masters by herself.

The Eagan LT Beginners Masters class is $15 a month, not sure if that makes a difference.

Hmpf.  The guy I talked to at the Eagan Lifetime really should have mentioned that.    This is just really my annoyance with cost versus value of my Lifetime membership these days, I really do appreciate the information.

I'm planning to cancel my LT membership and try LA Fitness, at least for a while anyway, so I probably wouldn't go there.  If it had been free, I might have considered it enough additional value to stick with it, but certainly not for more money.

Tell you what Emily, I'm by no means an expert swimmer.  But if your willing to travel down to Lakeville Lifetime once in awhile I would be glad to have a Masters class of two.  I'll come up with a good hours worth of swimming to keep us both going and motivated.  And then, you can buy us ice cream

Emily,I just joined LA fitness in Hopkins. I think it's a great place. Clean and has a nice lap pool. Not to many members their yet, so you can talk them down on their membership fees a little. I took a tour last week and told them I was going to join in December for 4-5 months. They came up with a deal for me and I join that day. For my wife,me, and my daughter at their kids club it's $75/month. On top of that health partners kicks in another $40 for my wife and I if we go 12/month. $35/month is pretty good deal. They also only charged me $25 dollar initiation fee. Thought you might what to know.

See ya
