Subject: Zipp 404 on the Front & 808 on the Rear?

I am trying to figure out if this is a good idea or not.  I need some versatility but want the best bang for the buck.

First the skinny (or not so skinny):  I am just under 200lbs.  I have never owned a fancy set of carbon wheels so I have no baseline for comparison.  I have an option to purchase this 400/800 combo wheelset (tubular Zipps/2 years old/tires included) for $800.  The wheels have been checked out by a professional and are in good shape.

What should I expect to discover with these new wheels?  What conditions should I avoid the use of these wheels?  Because of my size, will this mitigate the impact of crosswinds?  Is it worth it to hold out for the Clydesdale version?  Any info is welcomed.

That combination used to be called a 606 wheelset.  It's a great all around wheel set.  IMHO, if you're a decent bike handler, there are no conditions that those wheels won't do well in.

Depending on what you're riding now, you can expect to discover a lot of things.  Tubulars, I have found, turn quicker.  You will also have a bit of buffetting in the front end because of the aero section.  Nothing horrible, just you can feel the wind on them when you have a cross wind.

For $800, I'd have a checkbook out right now.

The 606s are different wheels than the 404 or 808s. Definitely a good deal. Are they the newer dimpled wheels or older non-dimpled. If dimpled let me know, and I will offer them $5 more than you. The 808s are fairly deep, and at your weight I would not worry too much unless you are going downhill and there are huge crosswinds.

Aaron,

Thanks for the note.  They are the new dimpled wheels.  I pulled the trigger yesterday afternoon and had the chance to sneak in a quick ride.  I didn't get to experience the crosswind yet but had an awesome ride.  It was sure a different feel from the Shimano clinchers I usually ride on.  I am looking forward to trying them out in a race this weekend.

aarondavidson - 2008-09-23 1:22 AM The 606s are different wheels than the 404 or 808s.

Are they?  I thought the 606 were an 808 on the rear and a 404 on the front (logic: 808+404 = 1212;  1212/2 = 606).  It's the spec you get on the B2 pro.

Yes, as Dan said, 808's were a 404 front and 808 rear.  And they only came in dimpled (since the 808's never came non-dimpled).

They just have a 606 sticker on them.  Just like my 999's are a standard 900 disc in the back and 808 front ...... with 999 stickers on them.

My bad I guess, I borrow 606s and knew that they were different depths, just never knew enough I guess.
