I just finished my first oly yesterday, and now I can't wait for my first HIM!!  I love going longer.  I had a great race - finished in 2:55:39 and placed 3rd in my AG (F30-34), but the best thing about it was I felt so great doing it.  It almost seemed like this distance suits me better than the sprint.  It just didn't seem as hard as the shorter distance.  Has anyone else had this experience?

Congratulations.  I had the same realization after completing my first Oly a few weeks ago.  I wonder if I'll be saying the same thing after my HIM!?

Congrats on the hardware!!  Great job.

I like longer distances because it levels out the field between those who are naturally fast, and those who are able to set the right pace for consistency over the entire distance.

Grats. I did my first Oly in July and am doing my first HIM this weekend also. I am hoping that I finish the HIM feeling as good as I did finishing the OLY.

Congrats...I felt the same way.  WHich I translated into I should have gone harder.

Now I am trying to decide on whether to jump to HIM or get faster on the shorter races.  I think the HIM has a certain attraction to it...plus it would involve a shorter race or to while building for it...so I will probably do that. I am thinking IMCA 70.3 and will decide in the next 3 or 4 weeks.  From what I read here it sounds like longer distances make you faster at the shorter stuff anyway.

I've said it before, I'll say it again-- I think the leap from Oly to HIM is MUCh bigger than the one from Sprint to Oly. You have to change your whole approach, physically as well as mentally. It's like the difference between bolting to the top of the hill to get it behind you or settling in for a gradual 10-mile climb.

An HIM is much more about pacing and nutrition. You have to train and condition your body to absorb energy while expending energy over a significant period of time. You also have to become more in tune with the level of physical effort your body is able to sustain over hours and hours, not minutes. That requires careful monitoring of your HR or RPE throughout your training as well as on race day.

Good luck in your training!

Great job on your finish.  I'm with you.  My first Oly was in mid August and I'm looking to do a HIM next summer.  I haven't done a Sprint and prefer the longer distances.  I like to take my time getting up to speed and tend to run the last half of a long race faster than the first half.

Congrats on the Oly, sweet finish!

Of course its not as hard, your not at LT the whole way!

I've done 1 HIM, the difference in training is a big jump so make sure you have the time dedicated.  I actually did another long course event ~ 6 mo after the HIM that I really liked, all the distances were ~1.5x an oly (2k swim, 60k ride, 15k run).  I wished there were more races of that distance.

Did OLYs this season, and I am really thinking about doing a HIM next year.  I have a couple of races in mind, has anyone done Tinman in NY?

I'm thinking either Musselman in Geneva, NY or Tinman in Tupper Lake, NY.  Any thoughts?

I'm thinking about the Musselman as on Sat we can watch the ITU race & con my wife into doing the sprint too.  I can do the HIM on Sunday AM and the kids can do the kiddie tri on Sunday afternoon.  Sounds like fun to me!

kelly, i think the jump from intl to HIM is a big step, but if you have trained accordingly then you will do fine. personally I recently completed the nations intl distance in DC and then the following weekend completed Savageman. yeah, yeah, i know that going back to back like that is foolish, especially since these were my first two triathlons. my training was geared towards the HIM and was bike-heavy with lots of hill training, the intl was just a warmup.  you'll need to have had experiment with nutrition and hydration substantially before your HIM.

I too felt that the HIM suited me much better (6/25 in AG) as opposed to 38/215 in AG for int'l. I think it may just work that way for some people!

Congrats on finishing your first Oly!!

Personally, I am starting to perfer the longer courses over the sprint. The longer course fit my style better. Of course, I will still hammer several sprints out next year, but the longer ones are great. I as you felt the best after my first International race. I had never felt that great after a race, and it really gave me a high. Now, I got that same high after my HIM on Saturday, but only after I got more calories in my afterwards. If you go the HIM route, then definitely put in the long bike and runs. Several, several of them. That will make your day that much more enjoyable.
