No more tri's for me for awhile. I am going to take some time off (maybe April next year) and learn to become a runner. For the amount of time I have put into training ( 2 months maybe) I am respectable at the swim and bike ( 20/51 swim and  12/51 rank in AG bike) but I CANNOT run to save my life. It is frustrating how comparatively slow I am as a runner. SO. I am going to take a few months and just try to run. I just feel I wont be placing any better until I become a runner. I hate running though. I admire all of your that can run. Just my little rant.

I love to run and have been able to become a faster runner while still training for tris. Let me know if you need advice/help with anything. I'm lucky to train with some really great people and they have given some great advice. I started doing track workouts in the spring and the speedwork has really helped Good luck!

Slow runner huh? I run a 12-14 min mile, bad feet and all. What are you running 10min miles?

I totally understand about the whole running thing. I use to like to run, when I was 40 lbs lighter, but over the years runnin gisnt as fun. I am a slow runner as well and I can tell you it takes time to get into it again. Still dont like running but its part of this whole SBR thing. Taking some time off really helps, and run focus is a great idea

Welcome to the I hate running club.  I used to be a decent sprinter, but a couple of foot surgeries and explicit instructions to try not to run (and not wear heels....damn that selective hearing), I finally decided that I need to learn to pretend to like it.  So I'm signed up for a couple of halfs because sticking with shorter distances meant I could slack off on training.  Try to start out with a walk/run program.  It'll be easier on you and it actually seems to make the time go by a little faster.  In fact, unless I decide to become an elite runner, I'm probably going to work up to an 8-10 min run and keep a 1 min walk in there.

I understand your pain! I hate running. I am pushing on a good day 13min miles. It will take me a year or so to get back to even being able to see were I used to be. I will not stop doing Tri's though. I must stay focused on races so that I will push myself to get better.

If you take time off from Tri's stay on BT so that you don't fall to far away from the sport.

I am still going to train for tri's just drop my swimming to once a week and bike to once a week. I am just not going to race anymore until the spring '09 (most races are over anyways). I will probably to some splash and dashes. Tri's are by FAR the most fun way to get into cardiovascular shape for me. AND don't worry I won't get off BT. I am in the middle of a stressful semester @ ASU right now so I will find anything to do rather than actually study and that is where my safe haven of the BT forum comes in. It is like a comfort food without actually eating! I yelled at you twice yesterday, as I was performing a very unsafe pass on the right between every rider I could find! (j/k that one was for you Tanya!)

I wouldn't mind some tips if you are giving them out!

I too am very, very slow. I am a very good swimmer, ok biker and horrible runner. I passed many people on the swim and some on the bike and then about 30 people passed me on the run. It is disheartening.

I have only been running for a few months. In June, I could not run a mile. Now I can run 4 without stopping. I also "ran" the entire run portion of the tri on sunday. In past tris, I have walked a good portion of the run. But I am so awful slow, I might as well walk!

I usually run 4 times per week with one longer run on saturday. Any suggestions are welcome. I assume it is just going to take time and I need to keep running.

Didn't mean to hijack......sorry.
Thanks.

In general you have to do some type of speedwork to get faster at running. Usually in the form of one tempo run and one track/speedwork session per week. However you really need to have a good running base before adding too much speedwork or you can hurt yourself.

If you run all your runs at the same "comfortable" pace, you will not get faster but you will be able to add to your runs and go farther. If your goal is to get faster, you should be able to do that with some tempo/speedwork.

This website is a great tool for figuring out which pace to do your tempo runs and speedwork (which could also be done on a treadmill):

Hope that helps a bit. Congrats on running the tri, that is awesome!

Its not a terrible idea to focus on your weakness for a while and come back to the "racing" aspect when you feel comfortable with that. I think its a solid plan. Just because you do not RACE persay does not mean you are not still an athlete or triathlete.

Rio,

Thanks for the website! I do generally seem to run the same speed all of the time so I will definitely use that to slowly add speed work. I don't have a lot of base so it will be slow process.

Ox, I hear you. I am in same boat as you. I will be walking a good chunk of the run at SOMA. Bike and swim I can do!

Saw this Pearl Izumi ad and it made me think of this thread:

If you ran without sacrifice, congratulations. You just jogged.

Running hurts. It always has. Woollly mammoths didn't just roll over onto a plate and serve themselves up to prehistoric man with fries and a shake. They had to be caught - and running down woolly mammoths was a . Guess what? Running is still a . But one with a purpose. It teaches us that good things do not come easy. It teaches us that we are capable of more than we think. It teaches us that hard work will be rewarded and lazines will be punished. Don't expect to learn those lesson from running's shiftless stepchild, jogging. Next time you suffer on the roads or trails, suffer proudly. It means you run like an animal.

Pretty good ad!
