What events would you determine that if they appeared on someones athletic accomplishments would you feel would be significant?

Things like:
- qualifying for Kona
- complete the grand slam of ultra running
- Ultraman

etc.

For me, it's finishing a sprint tri while working 80-100 hours a week in a hospital which includes unpredictable nights and weekends.

Everything's relative.

Gino Toretta won the Heisman Trophy.  I'm not sure it holds much prestige after that.

Any type of athletic event that does not involve a table, shuttlecock, another animal (like a horse), car, cards, broom (curling), half a fight (Olympic Taekwondo, which I refer to as Taedo, since the Kwon is non-existent), or prancing around with ribbons and hoops would be good enough on a resume to me.

"Ironman Triathlete, etc"

That alone should beg them to ask a question

"I put etc becasue to train for an Ironamn you must have strict focus to balance family, work, and  training to obtain that level of fitness.  Everything else in the sports worls becomes etc.  That focused mindset also allowed to excel in my career becasue I have always strived to be the best...yada yada yada"

Do you just want something that will set you apart from the rest of the stack?

"Ability to run around the block without stopping" ought to do it.

All depends on who it is being presented to, or more importantly, what the individual feels is significant.

Well, to answer my own question, I'm not that impressed with speed. I am impressed with distance. Finishers of Vermont, Western States and the like are impressive. Badwater and Ultraman finishers are on another level beyond that.

LOL.  In my age group (55), that's actually pretty impressive.

Someone of your advanced age can put down "Got out of bed this morning," and I'd be impressed.

Ironman finish, ultramarathon finish, olympic gold medal. All thiose would be really impressive! I guess it just depends on what you define as "impressive".

I think to define an impressive resume, you must better describe the position you are applying for.

Qualifying for Kona seems impressive to me, but I doubt my boss would have a clue what the hell I was even talking about and would be rather un-impressed.

Similarly, If I was trying out for a club lacrosse team, a Division I Championship ring would probably be far more relevant to the job, though no less impressive to me personally.

Conversely, finishing a long-distance event doesn't impress me all that much. Sure, it's a great accomplishment, but it's just a long day (now please don't every one pile on about how grueling that "long day" is, I've done plenty of long distance stuff to know first-hand). But speed... That is what I find impressive.

Freshman basketball (did you know there are 5 quarters?), JV High School Baseball, Intermural Flag Football (collegiate, no less), Dabbled in golf, co-ed slow pitch softball, recreational mountain biking

Read it and weep, I know I am.

I am always amazed by the "first" to do something.

But I would counter that the first person to break 4 minutes for the mile still has accomplished an amazing feat. I read that people didn't even think it was humanly possible at the time. And the first Tour de France, people called it torture. And of course who can forget the stories of the very first Hawaii Ironman. These people were all challenging human boundaries.

x2.  I got totally out of training and racing when I also had to add in "and drive the kids to their assorted activities every day". Now I'm that I finished my first season back with two sprints and a supersprint, I am hoping to get in good enough shape next season to do some Oly's.

Well, I think it would be impressive if that person had something on that resume that they thought they would never be able to do.

So it could be a 5K, marathon, IM, Ultraman, etc.

What interests me about this question is the fact that everyone will have a different perspective and should do for many reasons.

I am not into watching sports or reading about sports so I don't get the whole hoopla about specific titles, championships, etc.  Doesn't do much for me.

The people who stand out in "sports" to me are people who are good role models and "move" a sport due to them being involved.  Tiger Woods, he has done more for golf than anyone I can think of in recent history.  Lance Armstrong has done more for cycling than anyone in recent history (he may even due more coming back again?).  There are MANY others that I consider to be impressive people because they are good role models and have made differences outside of themselves.

I also value diversity (probably why I like Triathlons).  So someone who has climbed mountains, raced in adventure races, competed in an assortment of races (long or short), hiked many trails, can ride a bike, lead a white water expedition, fold a parasail, water ski, ride a donkey down a steep trail, etc. would be more "impressive" to me than someone who only competes in 1 event (even if it is at the highest level in a multi sport event like Ironman).

More importantly the people who impress me during triathlons are both the "Incredibly fit elite" and the "Overweight, older" people who are out there doing there best and have shown up to be there.

Just my opinion,

Michael

Since they caused the accident I know its against the rules but it would be kind of them to atleast take the bike. I think running over a competitor is against the rules also.

I think posting to the wrong thread is against the rules, too.

What impresses me, is when someone comes along and competes on a level that "the best of the best" can't compete with. In anything....it's truly a joy to see. Like the "Tiger Woods, Micheal Phelps etc etc many can go on this list!
