I've been hearing a lot of people say how striong your biking has to be to get a good (relatively) bike time then follow it with a strong run.

My bike training is rougly 50% of total training time. How does that compare with you advocates of "ride lots then ride some more".

Cheers

My bike time is more than 50% of my training time..I like to ride so I did some extra because I like it. Fun for me equals riding.

I am not sure it has to be 50% or more. . in fact I wish my running was more than it was and it will be next year. . having a strong bike allows you run off of the bike, but if you can't run in the first place (me) then it doesn't do you too much good.

To sum it up, I would say ride a lot. . but run a lot too.  If you are a naturally strong runner, then work more on the bike or swim. . For me, I am a good swimmer, so I don't worry too much about that.  I really focused on my bike this year and it has paid off, but now I need to focus on my run and maintain my bike fitness.  I compared 2007 to 2008 where I did IMCDA in both years and in 2008 I had more volume of biking leading up to IMCDA and it showed and I could feel it off of the bike and into the run.

2008 totals

I wouldn't call any of them a "strenth" for me at the moment. I'm not fast but happy on a bike and happily did a century last year. Longest run has been a 1/2 mary in the past and up to that distance now in traning and loving the long runs.

I think just plenty of everything and keep it well rounded is the call for me.

With my whole year worth of experience I can advise as follows

2008 totals
Bike: 164h 31m 22s - 3592.76 KM
Run: 117h 52m 43s - 594.39 Mi
Swim: 47h 24m 14s - 99610 M

That being said, a review of my graphs show that in May June July and August my total for Bike and Run were

Bike 131 hours
Run 37 hours

It appears I do most of my biking May- Aug and most of my running other times. Big problem is weather, cant ride in the winter so I run, then the summer came and I was like, holy crap, got to learn to ride, so I rode and didnt run.

I will work on this.

Currently my bike training is a big fat whopping ZERO% of my training.  Not that that helps you!

JeepFleeb - 2008-10-24 1:56 PM Last year: ~50% cycling

But I wouldn't read too much into it.  There's more at play than just volume.

Good call.

I've spent a little under 50% of my time on the bike as well this year.  Cycling takes up a hell of a lot of time- good thing I enjoy it

I'm still pretty new at this, but I've been doing more biking than swimming and running combined.  This might be because I don't swim nearly as much as I should.  Biking is my best event....coincidence??  hmmmm.....

Okay, what else is at play?  Does your overall effort on the bike and run differ?

For my past 4 IM, my rule of thumb has been running should be 50% of biking, swimming is 50% of running.

Math works out to biking being 57.14% of training.

When I started out, I was 50-60% of my basic week structure.  In terms of where I did "extra" when I had the time/energy -- that was 90-95% cycling.  I have always found the greatest endurance bounce from increasing cycling over the other sports.

You had to make me look at these and compare! I can't explain how I can eliminate 12 hrs of commuting each week and end up training less. Go figure!!

 So that's

1 part swimming

2 parts biking

4 parts running

Yep, you got it.  However, I don't swim very well and my run has sucked so you might want to take that into consideration before you take any of my advice.

I biked alot last year because its my worst event.  This was basically from January til my last race October 7th&8th, then I couldn't bring myself to ride anymore.  The extra biking helped but I really got sick of it towards the end.
