Ok so a gallon of gas, if you could drink it, would supply you with ~31,000 calories. Now I ran an easy 9 miles yesterday at roughly 900 calories an hour. So I did the math and I'm getting about 240 miles per gallon of gas when I run at my marathon pace. Pretty cool eh?

Do that math with Gu instead of gasoline and compare cost per mile.

keyone - 2008-10-27 5:46 PM Do that math with Gu instead of gasoline and compare cost per mile.

That will really show how cheap gas is.

GU comes out to something like a dollar per mile, ouch!

I'm getting about 12 miles per gallon of GU when I run, if you were curious.

You would consume 1 gallon of Gu for every 12 miles you ran?  That doesn't seem right, does it?

Well 1 GU packet = 100 calories. If I do 900 calories in an hour and do 7 mph (my marathon pace) that's 128 calories per mile.

14.5 packets of GU = 16 ounces = 1 gallon of GU

14.5 packets of GU = 1450 calories = 11.2 miles at my marathon pace.

I think?

16 ounces is 1 lb, not 1 gallon

Ounce is a unit of force, gallon is a unit of volume.

Ounce can be a unit of volume if it is water or some other water-like fluid.  You need to know the density of Gu to do the math

1 gallon [US, liquid] = 128 ounce [US, liquid]

Oh shoot yup you're right, I did that wrong, dumb mistake. I saw 1.1 when I looked at a GU packet but that's weight, so I that's 12 miles per pound of GU, not gallon.

Yeah, but Gu sinks in water, so it's density is higher which means there's probably more than 128 ounces of Gu per gallon of Gu.

This has gotten me thinking.  I wonder what the actual cost per mile is for training.  Forget the calories per mile and assume a pair or running shoes is 100 miles and they last 300 miles, this is 33.3 cents per mile.  Assuming gas is $2.50 a gallon and 25 miles per gallon, it costs 10 cents per mile to drive.  If gas goes to $8.25 a gallon, then it would be cheaper to run.

I'll add one more thing.  Assume a car is $25,000 and you keep it for 150,000 miles.  Now the cost to drive is 35 cents per mile.

I've been wanting to do this calculation for a while. In August, I rode my bike 80 miles in 5 hours. I was training for a HIM, so was 'training as I race', using the products I planned on racing with.

So, here's the math:

$7.00 - 7 Gu (1 every 45 minutes)
$2.00 - 1 Gallon water (bought at gas station to refill).
$0.75 - fig newton snack
$2.50 - NUUN tablets (electrolytes)
------------------------------------------
$12.25 to ride bike 80 miles.

If I drove that far in my car which gets a pitiful 16 miles per gallon, I would need 5 gallons of gas. x $3.50 per gallon = $17.50.

Hmmm. guess it is cheaper to ride! Even if I add the recovery drink, it's still cheaper. Plus, now in the off season, I am trying to get by with Gu every 1 hour and salt instead of NUUN.

I just bought gas for $2.50 a gallon.  Biking is still cheaper, but not if gas gets much cheaper!

Yeah, and you really should factor in improvements to your health/reduction in future health care costs associated with biking and/or running vs driving...

Holy crap!  You can get Gu for $1 per?

What about my knee replacement surgery costs from training too much?  Better yet, cartilage replacement surgery, assuming it becomes available in time.

To that I would say, on average, the health care costs of humans who exercise is lower than those who don't.  It's not a universal law, but a law of averages.

I wait for it to go on sale at my local Performance bike shop, and get the 24 packs for $24.

This whole world should use:

Meters, Millimeters, Kilometers, Centimeters.

Grams, Milligrams, Kilograms....... Make things easier.

P.S, how did you get 31,000 calories from a gallon of gas? ...human body calories?...or combustion engine calories?

What would actually be the fuel costs if you supplied your car with gu instead of gasoline?

imagine how long it would take to pump a tank full of gu, even when it is warm, it is still very viscous!
