I do some 50s on the minute to mix up my swimming. I usually do 3 laps then 2 laps of cool down, and repeat however much I feel like.

I usually do about 45 seconds a 50 during this. But this morning on my second set without trying to go any faster I pulled out a 35 second 50yard swim. Thats that fastest I've ever done that. Just wish I could swim that fast for race distances.

That was with a turn. And not a flip turn.

I just wish my overall swim times would start showing a little more speed. I know it's in there. Just not for the long distance. Maybe I should stop my watch whenever I am not actually swimming.

Nice!

I've also found that my faster times often come when I'm swimming relatively hard, but
not consciously trying to go all out.  I just wish I could keep the pace up for longer...

Wow man, congrats.  Swimming fast feels so good when it comes easy.  I remember when we used to do 10x50s on a 40 as the LAST set of our workouts in high school.  Talk about killer.

I'm just now getting back into swimming shape after 10 years and was real happy today when I broke 9 minutes (8:49) on my first 500m in my pyramid set which equates to around 1:37/100 yards.  This was a comfortable pace that wasn't even close to race speed, so I am happy that all this work is finally showing some fruition!

I know how you feel!! My best stand alone 100 yard time is 1:10 but I have never broken the 2:00 per 100 meter pace in a race (I did during a pool tri but I don't count that).
