Five days to my five mile race and I already am having problems sleeping. I laid in bed most of the night thinking about how I might do, If I am going to finish last, If I will be the heaviest person out there and other sort of crap.If I am this nervous about a race that I am actually just using for training purposes and having fun I can imagine what my first tri will be like.

PS The interview that I had last week led to a job offer and if we could agree on my schedule I will accept. The bad thing is that it is a c shift position and I would have to take it so that I can still attend my class in the evening and have my weekends off. All the a shift positions make you work on the weekends and that will get in the way of my Triathlons.

Hey Man,

Don't worry about your race. You are going to do fine. Just look at it this way, who cares if you're the heaviest person out there, at least you're out there running and having fun. There are plenty other people that would be like "Run? On a Saturday morning? I don't think so. I'm going to sleep in." So dude, I give you mad props.

As far as your sleep goes, jitters are normal leading up to a big race. When I ran my one and only marathon, the whole week prior I tried going to bed early. No could do. Roommates being loud, excitement, worries, and other things kept clogging the brain. The night before the race, I slept like crap because I shared a king size bed with my brother and my friend in a hotel room. However, it was one of the coolest races that I have ever done. Just try not to worry. If you feel you need to take a nap, take one.

One last thing, when you are at the start line and they are getting ready to start the race, take your palms of your hands and slap them lightly against your forehead and make a noise like "Arghhhhhh." It will psych you up and psych out your opponents.

On that note, and this entire article, good luck to ya on your race and have no worries because there is always room to improve.

Don't worry about the slight bit of anxiety you are having about your first race; it is quite natural to be anxious about new experiences.

There is no shame in finishing last or being the heaviest person in the crowd. I doubt that you will finish last though; the ones who usually come in last are the guys (and gals) who start off at a blistering pace that is way beyond their level. These guys usually wind up exhausting themselves or pulling a muscle.

As for your size, you will be very surprised. Actually that was my greatest fear when I did my first 10k (so many many years ago); at 220+ pounds an standing 6 feet tall, I thought that I would be laughed off the course but as it turns out I was not even close to being the biggest or the slowest. Just stick to your planned pace and you should be okay.

Kevin!  You'll be fine!  You won't be last and you won't be the biggest, and if you are.....so what?  You're out there kicking ass with all the other entrants and not home on the couch with the majority of the population.  Michel has great advice, run your own race.  Don't worry about how fast anyone else it running as this will only serve to throw off your pace.  Have a plan and stick to it.  Can't wait to hear how it went!

Kevin,

From one big tri`er to another, who cares. We are out there doing it. I'm never going to win one of these things, I dont have the right build for it. But I'm sure I'll have fun doing my first one solo. Besides even though we are big we can still kick ass. I was on a bike club ride last fall, and this guy shows up who was bigger than I am. He had on cut off sweat pants and an old tshirt.. Well let me tell you I had trouble keeping up with him. He practically smoked me. So we big guys can pack a lot of punch. eh?

Oh and as far as the sleep thing, I could never sleep before anything. Even when I was on a Tri team and I only had to do the bike leg. Who am I kidding, I cant sleep the night before going skiing with my son. They tell me I get excited to easliy. *shrug*

When is your Tri? I'm gearing up for a June race.

You're going to be great....remember IT'S FUN!
Think back to 1 month ago...two months ago....three months ago....reflect on all the milestones you hit...think back to the beginning when you may not have thought this possible..that should put things in perspective for you.....The worries you have right now are pretty damn good ones to have compared with what you had b4 you started training.....
Don't forget to breathe and be proud of what you're doing!

Can't wait to hear how it goes!!!

That's hilarious, I am definitely going to use that. It would be even better if I shaved my head first!

Kgart, just finish the thing and that will be more than what 99% of everyone else in america is doing saturday morning. Best of luck to you this weekend, I'm rooting for you!

Kevin,

I'm so proud of you. As another big person to another I know what it's like to show up for a race and look at all the other elite athletes and think, "What the heck am I doing here?" But I also know what's it's like to RUN MY RACE, and cross that finish line. It's the greatest feeling. And really, none of us are Olympians or trying to beat Lenny Krayzelburg or Ian Thorpe we're just regular Joe's who are doing something extraordinary. A friend of mine who was an ultramarathon runner used to say that you're never last when you finish a race, you're always a winner, because you beat everyone else that stayed in bed that day. You're winner for even tri'ing so forget the anxiety and go kick some butt!

Well the sleep thing cured itself, I napped for 3 hours after my workout yesterday and got about 8 last night.  Thanks for all the support. I know it doesn't matter where I place or my size.

Great pic Lara. Was that sunburn or just overheating? I probably won't have any sun or heat related problems. The forcast right now calls for 41 degrees and cloudy but we never know here the forcast changes daily. I have seen it go from 60 and sunny to 30 with heavy snow in a few hours.

Nice to put a face with your name.

When ever I start losing sleep over a race I try to funnel that anxiety into positve excitement.
I reread a running or tri magazine then try to think about and visual how great an experience the race will be for me. Not my time or training or size, just how great it will be to be in the event, to partcipate in something I worked hard to be a part of.
For me it is not about being fast it is about being in the moment, it may sound trite, but for me it is the best part of running.
Think about the course, the starting line pack, all the great volunteers, and most importently how great I will feel crossing that line (no matter how long it takes me!)

Smile and enjoy the moment, you are doing most people would not even attempt!

He Kevin -- It is the true countdown now. I know you are going to have great time and experience. Be sure to post your race AND let us know here how you felt. I surely agree with the "be in the moment" mind set. Enjoy what you are doing and that you ARE doing it.

Have fun-- you know our thoughts will be with you.

Thanks Nancy. I have decided to use the same strategy that I used when I was in the army and did a 12.22  2 mile run ( I will never see that again), I scoped out a pretty girl who was running the same pace and followed her till I got withing the 100 yards of the finish line then I sprinted past her. Tell you I am damn glad I had women in my unit or I never would have passed a PT TEST. I know that sounds bad but it really did help me focus on something instead of how much I hate running. Will post RR with Pics that day.
