Subject: Who wants to participate in my daughter's science fair project?

My 11 year old daughter is doing another science fair project on heart rate.  She wanted to compare the heart rate in different sports.  So we came up with the swim vs. bike vs. run.  She is using triathletes in their 40s as her sample group.

If you are in your 40s and want to take down some data, it would be appreciated.  This is the deal...

So you would swim, run and bike for ten minutes each.  Don't warm up before the activity but go at a high rate of perceived exertion.  We would need you to take your heart rate before each activity.  Then take your heart rate right after you complete it.  It would best if you did NOT do these back to back.

She is predicting which activity raises your heart rate the most.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks!

Okay...I just found out that you would have to do the process three times.  Meaning that you would need to do the run three times, the bike three times and the swim three times.  That may be too much.  Although, you should all be training anyway, right?

Is there a time constraint on when the project is due? I don't mind helping you out but it might take  up two weeks for me to get back to you. Also Im curious whether the results would vary depending on whether you excelled in one sport over the others. For example Im much better at running than biking or swimming.

If my coach didn't keep me on my Z2 training still, I would have liked to have helped.  Sorry.

Two weeks is fine.  She would need the data by Feb 15th.  We are starting early! I need at least ten people.  I will share the results.  I realize that people are better at one than the other and if she write that up as a possible problem with her project it will be okay with her teacher.  Maybe I will ask each person which is their strength and weakness.  I am better at running too!

According to her teacher, you can do more than one in a day if necessary.

Thanks for offering!

So your daughter is studying heart attacks??

I'm part of the desired demographic, and I'd be happy to send some HR data, but as an old guy, I don't go from zero to full-speed in the first 10 minutes.

I can get back to you in about 13 years....okay, maybe I can't help, but it sounds like a great experiment.

LOL.  It doesn't have to be full speed...I just didn't want any slacking!  Remember, this is a sixth grade project so it is not going to be published or anything.  I was thinking last night how to make it easier and not take so much help from people.  Like using LT heart rate data that people had already done.

I wanted to make this easier but she had "big" ideas and wants mom to help her pull it off.

I'm in.  I'll capture some data over the next two days and let you know.  I swim daily and alternate run and bike days.

If you still need volunteers (I didn't count) I'm willing, but I can't swim until next week when my stitches come out (actually I can swim, just the thought of pulling a swim cap over my stiches doesn't thrill me)

Hey, I'll do that.

I'll have swim and run data this week, and ride data this weekend. All data will be in by Sunday.

Pollywog - thanks!! Keep it coming!

Lani - yes, more volunteers is good. Be careful with the stitches!!!

Rick - thanks!! I will catch up with you all on the west side one of these days for a training session.

I think I need to make a chart for this data!! How come I always feel like my name should go on the science fair projects??

Novel concept here, but how about your daughter make the chart and post it here?

Just a caveat about my data:  I'll wear and report HRM data for biking and running, but I don't wear the HRM in the pool.  For swimming, I measure pulse over 15 seconds.

I will have her do it tonight!  She decided to do this after watching Kona IM with me.  I am wondering if she picks topics that interest me to spend more time with me or so that I will help her.    Either way it is okay.  Last year she did heart rate and music.

Swimming: Just multiply by 4... That's what I am going to do for the swimming.

Are you using the same resting heart rate for everything?

I think as long as everyone does the same intensity for each sport we will be okay.  For example, if you don't want to work at a high intensity, then to use a similar RPE for each.

2nd run start HR 63 10 min. HR 164

1st bike trainer ride start HR 57 10 min. HR 146

Hopefully swim tomorrow 60 mile drive to the pool so the roads have to be in good condition before I'll drive in.
