Pre-race routine:

After going to bed at 1:10 A.M. I got up at 4:45 A.M. to get ready to go. Oldest Son and I grabbed some breakfast and drove the 45 min. to the race finish and parked and took the shuttle to the start.

Waited in the Church gym because it was frikckin COLD.
Event warmup:

Read the paper and stretched some. Walked 1/4 mile to the start.

Comments:

This is my first "race" since the Disney Marathon and I have done this event many times over the years and I really like it. I have done very little training this past week or 2 with my MIL being moved from home to hospice for her terminal condition. My training "partner" Dr. GoodHands was sick with the flu and gave her number to my oldest son who has not races (or run or trained much until very recently) in 17.5 years.....he did AWESOME.

I decided to just take it out and try to run the entire 6.2 and see what happened. I guess if I had a stated time goal it would have been sub 60 min. but with the lack of regular training and it being pretty chilly I didn't know if that was possible.

I have a love hate relationship with my iPod....I love to run with it most of the time but I am a techno-idiot and today that cost me a sub-60 min. 10k.....FRICK. I had to walk for about 2 min. twice to fix the blasted thing when it hung up and cut off. Those 2 times combined with 1 <30 sec. walk at a water stop would have gotten me below 60 min. with ease. Oh well.

Race went well otherwise and I was pretty pleased with my ability to finish fairly strong....BTW.....Son finished in 1:19:30 doing walk 3/run 2...HoooRaaay Matt.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I wish I has been able to put in some more miles the last few weeks. This was a "C" race for me and I do it to support the cause and it is in my old neighborhood where I lived and it passes 2 of the Fire Stations that I used to work at so it isn't something I was trying to P.R.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some fruit and drinks and went back to the finish line to cheer Matt in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was cold...I am old...I am slow...My iPod F'ed up...did I mention I am old and slow...yep...that covers it.

Wow! Nice job, Mr. Speedy! (Next time you'll just ditch the iPod, right?) Looks like the lack of major training hasn't hurt you much.

Ha ha ha--the iPod defense --no matter, you did an AWESOME RACE and you were plenty speedy anyway! Great job out there supporting a good cause, and glad you had a good time doing it.

Great run out there in the cold with only three and a half hours of sleep. I could not do that! Keep up the hard work and maybe I'll run into you at the Turtle Crawl!
