Subject: Subaru US Women's Triathlon Series - Naperville : Official Thread

Morning all ~ Didn't see this started anywhere and my couch to sprint training program starts on Monday so thought I would get it started.

I am so excited about this - I have wanted to do a tri since the early 90's when I lived in Hawaii and kept seeing all the triathlete's come through for KONA.  So finally taking the plunge (or should I say sticking my toe in) with my first tri.

I'll be training at the Provena Inwood Athletic Center in Joliet and then switching some of the swimming to Centennial Beach when it opens. I swam there every day during the summer in high school - should be interesting going back.

I look forward to hearing about everyones training and maybe meeting up with a few of you in June!

Peace ~ Charliegirl

You picked a wonderful first tri.  I've done this race for the past 2 years and really like it.  Very well run, nice local crowd support.  Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Suzimmer ~ I'm really excited!  Registered at the gym today - training starts tomorrow.  Can't believe 12 weeks from today I'll have completed my first triathlon!

This will be my first triathlon in 10 years.  3 kids later and about 10 extra pounds...here I go again.  Training for the past 4 weeks has been great.  I enjoy swimming but my workouts had gotten "stale".  Now that I have a goal, everything has picked up a notch.

I really like recording my workouts on this site.  It helps me to stay focused, reminds me of what I've already accomplished and encourages me to push on.

I've heard great things about this tri.  I think it will be a good one to start with this year.  I plan on doing a couple more if it goes well.

Good luck!

I agree with Suzimmer - a great race, and especially good for a first race.  Fairly straightforward, flat course, wonderful local support and the women's only atmosphere really lends a "you go, girl!" feel to it all.

Charliegirl - I'm actually out your way, kind of... north side of Plainfield.   I hear that the new facilities at Inwood are pretty nice.

The new Joliet Inwood facility is great - lived in Bolingbrook for a while and they had a nice gym but nothing like this. Everything is state of the Art and everyone is rediculously friendly and helpful.

I did this race last year as my "first tri"...finished in 1:30, which I was overjoyed about! I honestly expected to finish more around the 2-hour mark. It was great! Very well-run and organized. The expo held the day before at Naperville HS is decent, too...lots of vendors with some good bargains to be had! I'll probably sign up for it again...just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Hi everyone!  This will be my first "full" sprint.  I did a super sprint last summer and was hooked!  Training is going ok although I am battling a little PF and stuggling to get my swims in schedule wise. I am really looking forward to this race!

For the first-timers in the group, here's a link to the thread last year...

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=114967&posts=96&start=1

We had some discussions about the course, water temp, transitions - things like that which might be helpful.  And any questions, feel free to post - I've done the race a handful of times now and can probably at least GUESS at an answer for you.

Charlie-girl, I am also doing the tri and plan to swim at Centennial when it opens.  I have lived in Naperville for 9 years and have never swum there!

I am doing this tri as my first also.  I have heard that it is a wonderful crowd and very supportive.  It is very exciting.

Good luck to all with the training, a friend of mine told me to enjoy the training.  I have one of my goals to do just that!

NSCRBUG,
I see last year it was your first time.  How did you like the tri-suit you bought?

I love it!!! It's super comfortable...it's the DeSoto Forza. The only downside I can see, is that it's NOT chlorine-friendly. I didn't know that, and now regret doing so. A few times won't hurt the suit...like using it during the Naperville race...but I continued to wear it while doing my pool swims to train for the next race I was doing in August and I think doing that may have deteriorated the suit a tad bit. Oh...it does not have a built-in bra...if that's important to you. I wore a TYR sportsbra type top underneath for extra support on top. Hope this helps!

Linda, Well it sounds like I won't be buying a suit online.  I am going to go to a few stores and check them out.  Thanks for the chlorine tip, as I will be in a pool a lot.  Thanks 1,000 times for the bra tip.  This is the part that FREAKS me out.  That matters to me, I have to keep those girls locked down or I won't finish!  Did the bra chafe at all?  Did you practice with the bra under the suit first, too?  I am sorry to ask so many questions, but you opened a can of worms   Thanks for the help!

Hi all,

I am also doing this as my first tri.  This race is actually listed twice in the race list, as above Subaru US Women's Triathlon Series and as US Women's Racing Series and there are 4 people signed up on that one.  Is there a way to get the two combined?

Does anyone wear a wetsuit in this race?  Growing up in Hawaii, I like my water warmer :-)

Amy...I did not get a chance to do a "practice run" with the bra on underneath my trisuit. Infact, I didn't find something suitable to wear under it, until the DAY BEFORE THE RACE...AT THE EXPO!!! That being said, I don't recall being uncomfortable at any point...so, I guess it didn't chafe. I'm not sure where you are located, but there are a few stores you might want to check out. First one being Endure IT! in Naperville. I've actually never been there, but hear it's great and I plan on getting over there soon for a bike fit. The other store where I actually purchased my trisuit, is Urban Tri Gear in Westmont. It's a small shop, but he's got a nice selection of tri apparel and fairly reasonable prices...very helpful and knowledgeable too. He actually helped me choose my trisuit, based on fit, look, etc. He has another Urban Tri Gear location in Burr Ridge, too. Hope this helps you out somewhat in your search for tri gear.

Anyone know of a good place to shop for Tri-gear in the NW suburbs (Barrington) area.

With this being my first tri  in quite some time,  I am debating on the whole tri-suit/tri-short options.  I'm thinking I'll just where my speedo, pull on some bike shorts and the change into running shorts during the 2nd transition.
My hubby's going to kill me if I buy any more gear, but I'm still curious to see my options.

I can't wait!!!  Great run in the Cuba Marsh this morning.  Hoping to ride outside soon....Also looking for some bike groups in this area too.

Keep up the hard work girls.  Looks like this race is going to be a blast!!!

Has anyone been by Centennial Beach or talked to the park district about the temperature of the water?  I am getting a bit worried, since we are a week away and the air temp has consistently been in the fifties!  I just tried to call the park district to get the latest temp, but the she had no clue.
