If your gym has classes check to see if they do a quick abs class.  My gym does a 15 minute abs class that kicks my arse but is efficient.  It works abs and low back.

Once ski season is over I'd like to add some pilates into my schedule as well.

The ab wheel. It shouldn't cost you more than $10 at Wal-Mart, if that. It's basically a wheel with handles.

Don't forget that the core has a front and back. The front are your abs, of course, and the back is, well, your entire back, especially your lower back. I like deadlifts for the back part of the core and if you know how to do them with proper form I highly recommend them.

Customizing ab circuits has become a fun little hobby of mine. In light of what Mike mentioned above, I love the Superman.
Essentially it's a back extension on the 45 degree standing decline thing (whatever that is called), however instead of holding a plate to your chest while you do it, hold two light dumbbells in each hand straight over your head. You'll feel both a great front and back core work out.
The swiss ball is another great tool for working your core. Some of the more unique and challenging movements I really like on the swiss are: knee tucks, pike-ups, and the swiss ball plank pose.
Have fun.

Planks, push-ups, dead lifts and reverse flies are what I do when pushed for time.

THIS is a great ab workout, I'm enjoying adding it in a couple times a week, and I've noticed a difference in my training.

When I did pole vault, we did a core exercise like this:  lie on the floor with your head next to a well-secured vertical pole (as part of a weight machine, dip/pull up station, etc).  Grip the pole with your hands just about 10-12" above the floor.  Pull with your arms, and raise your feet to a vertical position... BUT, don't bend at the waist at all.  Only bend at the shoulders and neck, so your head stays on the floor, but your torso, waist, and legs are all in a straight line.  So your feet will come off the ground about the same time as your butt does.

If you can't do this once, bend at the waist on the way up, then get your body in a line pointing straight up, and slowly lower yourself.

Doing this right, knocking out a few reps is a fantastic core workout.

Taff, if you like ab circuits, you should try the Turkish get up.

Cool, thanks Mike! I have seen this before but its complexity had me overlooking it. Ill practice it a few times before trying to do it in the weight room.
I can definitely see why your big one on deadlifts. So many variations and working so many muscles at once. Maybe when I find that dream job in Denver we can do a little training together.

Here's a good tutorial on the TGU.

Yeah, if you come to Denver, it'd be great to get in some training sessions.

i usually do my own circuit, but out of that i would say that planks are my favorite.  they work everything in the core and teach you to keep proper form.  can always integrate leg raises into them also

Good core work on the stability ball for me.  Pikes on the ball.  Pushups on the ball (either with my hands on it or my feet), knee drives, roll-outs, all kinds of variations.  Core killer for me is hands on the floor (like you're in a push-up), feet up on the ball so that just your laces are on it, not your shins.  Lift one leg up and use the other that is on the ball to drive your knee forward and back, or life one foot up and do push-ups, all kinds of good stuff.

And someone else mentioned, don't forget your back!  Huge for core!

I like the TGU!

Question on the TGU...can this be done effectively with a dumbell instead of a kettlebell? My gym doesn't have any kettlebells.

Yes, no problem. Keep a good grip on it because a dumbbell won't sit securely against your forearm like a kettlebell, but it should be fine. This is a humbling exercise. I consider myself to be relatively strong but can't use much weight for this one.

While we are on the core subject, does anyone have any special or unique ranges of motion for targeting the obliques? I usually do a variety of side bends and alike, but need something different.

Side bends are your best bet because it forces the obliques to do what they were designed to do.

You can also try the Pallof press. Not a pure oblique exercise per se but it forces your upper torso to resist rotation so it'll definitely hit the obliques as well as other important core muscles.

My fav is the single leg squat with one foot on a BOSU Ball.  Rough on the core and great for the legs and hips

That sounds really tough...but I'd like to try it. When you say one foot on the BOSU ball...do you mean the rounded blue side, or the flat black side? I would think either way would be pretty challenging.

Definitely hip-bridge on a stability ball and hamstring curls on the ball also.

Great core workout for hip flexors, abs, obliques, and lower back.  Its only around 12 minutes long...

Squat, Deadlift. They are the best core workouts you will find. Also the Front squat is a variation that promotes a very strong core.

In reference to deadlifts as a core exercise...would this be the "stiff-legged" or "Romanian" variety?  Or does it not really matter which kind you do?
