Subject: What do you do for work/career?
Hi All. Not sure if someone has already started a thread like this but if there is one out there I definitely couldn't find it.

I myself am an Operations Manager, I like to think of it as a fancier name for babysitter, for a distribution company. I pretty much run the operations department which includes shipping, receiving & anything else to do with the warehouse. I have 7 employees which I babysit Monday to Friday. With all the drama, bitchin & whining, I feel like Im in high school all over again.

I recently got my diploma in Accounting and have started the degree program this past year. Right now im taking the summer off from school to really think about my career choice. I'm a pretty active person and love being on my feet, which I do for 8 hours a day as an operations manager. I have lately begun to think about whether to continue with Accounting or move onto something else. I just don't know if I can sit at a desk for the rest of my life.

Since I graduated from high school, back in 2000, I've gone to school for 3D animation, which I left because I lost interest. I wanted to be a firefighter, but gave up on that idea due to lack of available jobs ( I was told that approx. 3 to 4 out of 96 students got a job in the Vancouver area in one year). Now im doing the whole accounting thing which isn't bad at all but im not sure if it is right for me. Thinking about what to do with my life kind of depresses me as I feel that I've gotten to an age, im 27, where I should know what I want to do and should be doing it or in the process of achieving it.

BUT anyways, I've always been interested in what other people do for work, not sure why but I just have, so I thought I'd ask. What do you do for work/career?

I am an Application Specialist (aka Software Trainer) for a public sector software company.  We work with city and county governments.  My job is to travel to the client site and help install our software and then train the clients on how to use it.  I've been with my company for just under a year.

Prior to this I worked for a large nationally known Mortgage company, first as a Mortgage Banker and later as a Sales Trainer.  I was with this company for 5.5 years.

My degree is in Advertising and Public Relations.

I'm a high school English teacher.  Mostly I teach ninth grade, which next year includes a remedial reading class, regular level and a college-bound honors class.  Even though it's a tough job, I couldn't imagine doing something else.  This was my 20th year in the classroom.

I'm a geek -- Software Programmer. Currently working for a large insurance company as a full time employee, but I've been a contractor for so long, I'm not sure if the FTE thing with really take root in my brain. But this is the shortest commute I've ever had, and it's right next to great biking and running, so I'm trying to stay put for as long as possible. Must resist the wanderlust!

Can I work for you?

Former real estate appraiser ... now a Princess.

You'll have to get your Nebraska reciprocation! With rates jumping up a whole point this past week, I'm curious to see how my first year goes... from April 15 to May 15 we had the second-highest number of pending sales in my town that we've EVER HAD. So that's encouraging!

Associate Professor of German. I teach courses in language, literature, culture, and film. I also do lots of administrative work, for example, I was Associate Chair for 4 years and in charge of advising and class scheduling for our large Modern Languages department. In my research, I focus on 20th-century literature and film, with an emphasis on satire and humor, German-Jewish topics, and literary translation. I've published several articles and translations in peer-reviewed journals and a textbook with an academic publishing house.

I got my PhD 9 years ago and was tenured last year. I have worked for the same university for 7 year now. My students (BA majors) work all over the world, some for German companies, some for US companies that hire them for their critical thinking and writing skills, language proficiency, and study abroad experience. Many students move on into business, foreign service, teaching, hotel and restaurant management, or chose to pursue graduate studies. We also have a large share of engineering students double-majoring in German.

Academics are on 9-month contracts so I'm officially "off" (and unpaid) for the summer. That means I catch up on everything that didn't get done during the academic year: research, class prep for next semester, house renovations, tri training, and traveling (to visit family in Europe).

I currently am a Scientific Researcher for a big Pre-Clinical Company.
Also have my BS in Biochemistry.

However, I am hopefully starting paramedic school in the fall so I can become a Firefighter/Paramedic. Have my Firefighter I, so hopefully at some point next year I will have a new career.
