Just wanted to 'blow my own trumpet' (sic)

managed to run 5k for the first time today.. continuous.. no walking.. no breaks.. pace is.. um.. well.. slooow. But it is done.. I feel great.. no soreness.. just great ! I have been struggling with a shin splint for a while, but I think a combination of HTFU and a compression sock have done the job.

Was 320lb when I started training.. down to 295 now, so still a long way to go..

thanks man.. I feel so good lately.. the fittest I have ever felt in my life.. and I am about to crack 40.

short term goal is to get a couple of sprints under my belt.. but I am drawn to Halfs.. the swim and ride distance looks good to me.. just got to get the weight and run under control.

hey everyone, I really appreciate the comments and support.. Thank you !! Laughing

I have been holding off signing up for a Triathlon until I could achieve this, so this weekend I will be doing so. It is a sprint in a very pretty part of Australia, Airlie Beach.  I might well finish last, but hey, if thats the worst thing that happens, its all good !

congrats on the 5K and the weightloss and the soon-to-come registration for your first race.  you probably won't finish last, but even if you do, you're way ahead of all the people at home on the couch!  keep it up!

hey serenityau (er...i mean g'day),
that's friggin awesome. Both the run and signing up for a sprint. With the run, resist the urge to overdo it. You don't want to have an injury set all your awesome progress back. make sure you're not landing on your heel with the leg extended, and that you are engaging your core on your strides, arms comfortable and loose at your sides, not crossing midline. Awesome job!

Thank everyone again ! and yes Gabe, very good advice.. I feel my style is very smooth and low impact.. I have really concentrated on this rather than worry about how fast I am going. I also try and move the arms only a littleand keep them high.. I also try and feel like I am slightly tipping over forwards while I am running (something I read on a runners forum) Its nearly two days since this run and I have no problems.. body feels fine. Will be doing this every 3 days to not overdo it.
