Pre-race routine:

Basically none. I had been up since Midnight brooding about my father's death on Friday, and came up with the idea that since I hadn't run in months, due to a leg injury, that I'd HTFU - since my father had done so for 33 years with heart problems that ultimately led to the stroke that took him out - that now would be a great time to start running again - since my leg felt better - and run the whole way regardless of how my leg felt. Dad lived every day the past two decades with chest pain, sometimes so bad he was almost snorting his nitro spray, and I could hobble through a little ITB/knee pain if I needed for 5K.
Event warmup:

What is now my Mother's house is at the bottom of a hill. I walked a block to loosen up my legs, hit the Garmin, cranked Martone on the iPod, and headed toward a 5K loop around my high school.
Run
  • 36m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

I haven't run since roughly last fall - October may have been my last 'serious' run (I'd have to check my logs, and I'm too unmotivated to do that) - due to a self-inflicted left leg injury caused by riding a single speed with a 48x18 cog. I'm too damn old to push that big of a gear in commuter traffic, and I messed my leg up and weakened it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Except it would have been great if my father was still alive and could've seen me walk in the front door and ask me "how was your run?" as he always did. :)

I suppose I *could* have done this on the 'official Father's Day' but it felt right to do it today... I would have done it yesterday (Friday) when he died but my mother needed my support.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked about a half mile and smiled at all the bicyclists I saw. Biking is up in California and here, apparently.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Um, not running for about 9 months. So its like I gave birth to a run today. :)

Event comments:

I will be doing a tribute 5K to my father every year either on or close to the anniversary of his death (June 19, 2009). He was always so proud of me for exercising and keeping my weight down, something he was not successful in doing and contributed in a large part to his health problems.

I simply want to set a good example - really to myself - but next year I might have a special t-shirt made and ask others to join me on a non-competitive, time it if you want to tribute run to their father. It does not have to be in memory, either, your Dad can still be kickin' and cussin' and you can run :)

Overall: 1/1
Performance: Good
My replacement 205 which replaced my first 205 is acting screwy, so I just bought a 305 to replace it. Its accurately measuring distance, but the display is going insane. I've never liked refurbished equipment. There's a reason its refurbed. So I'll have a heart monitor in another week or so, kind of important since I probably have those bad heart genes.
Course: Up 44th Street, across University Avenue, continuing on 44th Street to Kingman, right on 42nd, right on the frontage road on the south side of Roosevelt High School, across the I-235 ped bridge, loop, return to frontage road, right on Polk Boulevard, right on Kingman... and the 3.11 loop basically ended about 50' from the house my high school band director lives in.

Heh. Maybe we have a movement... should I buy "5KforDad.org"? I like the idea of a voluntary, non-profit run, but I'd want to make sure there were the standard legal disclaimers...

Great idea! Plus, it would occur right around Father's Day, so it's doubly appropriate.

Maybe people could sign up for a virtual 5K. The entry fee could get them a t-shirt (because it's all about the t-shirt! LOL), and the rest would go to donated to a charity organization.

P.S. This is something you might want to tell your kids about ... remembrances of their grandfather will be very important esp. as they get a bit older.

Lovely run, again.
