![]() Run
Comments: I haven't run since roughly last fall - October may have been my last 'serious' run (I'd have to check my logs, and I'm too unmotivated to do that) - due to a self-inflicted left leg injury caused by riding a single speed with a 48x18 cog. I'm too damn old to push that big of a gear in commuter traffic, and I messed my leg up and weakened it. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Except it would have been great if my father was still alive and could've seen me walk in the front door and ask me "how was your run?" as he always did. :) I suppose I *could* have done this on the 'official Father's Day' but it felt right to do it today... I would have done it yesterday (Friday) when he died but my mother needed my support. ![]() Post race
Warm down: I walked about a half mile and smiled at all the bicyclists I saw. Biking is up in California and here, apparently. What limited your ability to perform faster: Um, not running for about 9 months. So its like I gave birth to a run today. :) Event comments: I will be doing a tribute 5K to my father every year either on or close to the anniversary of his death (June 19, 2009). He was always so proud of me for exercising and keeping my weight down, something he was not successful in doing and contributed in a large part to his health problems. I simply want to set a good example - really to myself - but next year I might have a special t-shirt made and ask others to join me on a non-competitive, time it if you want to tribute run to their father. It does not have to be in memory, either, your Dad can still be kickin' and cussin' and you can run :) Last updated: 2009-06-20 12:00 AM

Basically none. I had been up since Midnight brooding about my father's death on Friday, and came up with the idea that since I hadn't run in months, due to a leg injury, that I'd HTFU - since my father had done so for 33 years with heart problems that ultimately led to the stroke that took him out - that now would be a great time to start running again - since my leg felt better - and run the whole way regardless of how my leg felt. Dad lived every day the past two decades with chest pain, sometimes so bad he was almost snorting his nitro spray, and I could hobble through a little ITB/knee pain if I needed for 5K.
What is now my Mother's house is at the bottom of a hill. I walked a block to loosen up my legs, hit the Garmin, cranked Martone on the iPod, and headed toward a 5K loop around my high school.
