Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() All my cycling friends claim it isn't a question of if, it is more when. I've been fine with the whole clipless pedals thing, which is where they expected I'd first fall over. Anyway, we say the same thing in the motorcylcing world, but I got my first crash out of the way last Saturday on a brisk training ride. I finally got my front derailleur adjusted right but I was looking down at it (not trusting it) while chugging up a hill around ~15mph... veered off the road, folded the front wheel and down I went onto the pavement. It happened pretty quick. Bike and rider are fine, save for a little rash on the tip of the handlebar and on my forearm and leg. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just be glad you didn't have your first crash in the middle of your first HIM like I did two weeks ago. Ugh. Then after enduring the pain of actually completing a six hour race, I had to have the circle of road rash 6 inches in diameter under my butt cheek scrubbed out by the race medic! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you have carbon handlebars, get them checked out by your local bike shop. After my first crash, I would have just said the bars were scratched and I just needed new bar tape, but after having them checked they needed to be replaced. Better to be safe. Glad you are ok. I have a nice scar on my elbow from my crash to always remind me of the day. |

Sounds very similar but the only bike damage I can find is a little scuff on the end of my bar... it also pulled the bar end cap partially out and scuffed the side of the seat a bit. Not only did I not have gloves on... all I tend to ride in is a helmet, bike shorts and shoes. When I was getting up off the road I was thinking "how much rash did I just get?" Thankfully not much. Interesting reading all the other crash stories. Going down in a HIM would suck pretty bad. As I think over the crash more after the fact, I'm glad I had my helmet on. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I fall into the third category! I had a clipless incident about three weeks ago waiting to cross the street on the hike/bike trail. Fell hard to the left, road rash, and a broken or deeply bruised hand. Then Saturday, trying to decide to jump on the trail in front of another rider and runners or wait, I clipped out left, but hesitated and went down on the right before I could get unclipped. Road rash, knee and upper calf, big bruises on my right butt check and lower quad. No hand damage, I landed half on the pavement, half in the grass. Embarassing for sure, just glad I didn't hurt anything too bad. Both incidents were due to lack of concentration or distraction. Must stay focused!! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First real crash yesterday, head on with another cyclist who couldn't decide whether to go to my right or left on a narrow path with pedestrians ambling down the center. I am pretty sure we drive on the right in this country.... It happened very quickly, though, so I'm not sure I remember all the details, and likely I was going faster than I should have been. Smashed up my back pretty badly and spent hours in the emergency room, ambulance trip and all. The other guy was just fine. Things seem to be ok, but I'm bummed about the training time this will cost me since I just had a week mostly off while on vacation! Not that I am glad other people have crashed, but it is nice to hear I'm not the only one who has been in a similar situation. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I tend to fall once per season at a light when I forget to unclip, but I had my first real crash last weekend. I was riding down in Jersey while we were visiting my dad, and I went to move from the shoulder to the travel lane to avoid a parked car (like I'd done a million times already that day). The travel lane there (Rt 35 in Bay Head) is concrete, and the shoulder is asphalt, and I caught my front tire on the lip. I skidded all over the place and almost saved it, but I ended up sliding down the center line, luckily during a break in traffic. Road rash on my knees and my right elbow, a little bruise on my head where my helmet plonked off the concrete (wear your helmet, people!), and some sore ribs and shoulder that will probably keep me from swimming for a couple of weeks. Luckily the race we'd gone down there for was inside the "not too sore yet" window, so I got it done... then later Sunday the major soreness set in. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just to add to the bike crash frenzy - I went down for the first time on Tuesday night. I caught a dip in the pavement that ejected me over the handlebars at about 19-20 mph. Road rash on my left side, arm, shoulder, hip and bruised forehead. My helmet cracked in 2 spots and saved me arse! My bike was fine amazingly and I was able to ride the long 25 minutes back home. ER fixed me up good and cleaned my wounds. I am not going to swim for a week probably but plan on getting back in the saddle Sunday at the earliest and running tomorrow. I knew that fall was coming it was just a matter of when...Now that I have that out of the way...never again please. |
