Subject: HIM necessary before IM?

Is it necessary to do a practice HIM before your first full IM? Or would it be more beneficial to stay home and get in long training rides/runs instead. I've always assumed that you had to do a HIM X amount of weeks out of the IM. That close to the IM is there really any extra knowledge that you would gain from a HIM that would make a difference? It seems awfully close to making any major adjustments to your plan.

I have 2 options of HIM races that are close to IMFL. Redman and Prarieman which are both in mid September. Longhorn was my first HIM last year. I'm an experienced cyclist with a few marathons completed. Trained for 2 other marathons but was unable to race due to injuries/bike wreck. Swimming is my weakest sport. I need all of the OWS mass start practice that I can get. Which is the main reason that I would do either of these races. There is a 2.4 mile swim race in August that I'm going to.

One of the biggest problems that I have a races is not going out hard enough. I tend to hold back and stay in a comfortable zone. Which is probably why the longer distance races are my favorites. Actually the longer the distance the happier my body is. I always feel wonderful around mile 17-26 of the marathon. Hopefully this will pay off for the IM too!

Suggestions?

I didn't do it. I was fine.

My reasoning... although a bit odd... was that I had a great first HIM. I didn't want to do another, and have that suck.. and make me doubt my abilities for my IM.

So I didn't do a HIM..just an Oly before the IM. I finished my IM.

No, you don't.    You've already done a HIM, so it's not a question of distance

Last year I went Oly - Long COurse (not quite HIM) - HIM - IM, simply as a way of judging how my training was progressing, but you certainly don't have to do a HIM as a part of the lead up to IM

1/2 and IM racing are nothing alike....so no.

While training for IM, its very easy to just add in a 1/2 pretty much any time.

Depends.  Some Pros and Cons that I foresee:

Pros:
1). You get all 3 disciplines done (as a practice) in one day.
2). You gain a little more knowledge in certain areas (i.e. where to seat yourself, nutrition intake, etc.)
3). Enjoy the day and partake in some fun festivities.
4). Use it to build a little speed for the IM.
5). Real-time practice for those transitions.

Cons:
1). Cost of race entry, driving to venue, etc.

There could be more, but these were the ones that stood out.

I think it is a really good idea to do a HIM before doing an IM because it gives you a feel for how much it takes out of you.  Also, it gives you a chance to try out your pacing and nutrition.  As stated above it also gives you some feedback on how strong your training is.

You may find your calorie intake is too low, your pace on the bike is too fast to support your run, etc.

But, if your training is solid, your nutrition is spot on for really long training days both bike and run ad you have your pacing down, sure you don't need to do a HIM.

Thanks, right now I'm leaning towards skipping the HIM. KHS-thanks for your comments. They really hit home. I enjoyed my HIM and had a good race. I can get in good solid training in my area without spending the $$ for a race or taking vacation time.
