Subject: What does ASTHMA feel like??
I've lately been wondering if it might be possible that I have developed mild asthma (perhaps of the exercise-induced variety), and am wondering if those of you asthma sufferers out there can shed some light on whether what I'm experiencing might be asthma or not (I know, I know - consult a doctor, etc., etc., etc.... I plan to, but was hoping for some insight here as well)

I've lately noticed that especially when I am pushing hard during a workout, I sometimes have difficulty taking deep enough breaths, and occasionally feel a brief sharp pain in my chest when trying to breathe deeply. If I back off a little, I am able to breathe deeply enough. This is particularly noticable for me if I am swimming hard, but I've also noticed it on harder run/bike workouts. I have also on occasion felt a bit light-headed during a workout, and wonder if it might be the result of some airway restriction reducing oxygen intake, and occasionally find myself coughing toward the end of longer, less intense workouts. I've never experienced anything like feeling like I couldn't breathe (which is what I imagine a real asthma attack feels like) with the possible exception of a minor episode during a hard swim workout during which I also happened to be wearing my wetsuit. At the time, I chocked that up to over-heating and possibly the wetsuit constricting my breathing, but now I'm not so sure...

Does this sound at all like it could be asthma, or is it just someone who needs better conditioning for harder workouts?

Note: I am not a doctor.

My .02 - I have asthma and what you're describing sounds a lot like what happens to me if I don't use my inhaler before I exercise. It's hard to take a deep breath and your chest can feel tight. Sometimes I will have small coughing fits afterwards where it feels like there's something in your chest that you have to get out (mostly in the winter).

"Not being conditioned enough" doesn't feel the same way at all. When I first started getting back into running and I was totally out of shape, it was a much different feeling than if I had forgotten to take a puff of my inhaler before going out for a run. Not being conditioned would lead to breathing heavier, not not being able to take in a full breath. Did that make any sense at all?

All that said, I think it's a good idea to see your doc Smile

I don't know what asthma feels like, so I could be wrong, but to me it just sounds like you're pushing yourself really hard, and aren't fully used to what it feels like yet. The reason I say that is because you say that you can back off and breath easier. I don't think that's possible if you have a true asthma attack. And, the way you describe your breathing sounds like how I felt doing my 800 repeats this morning

Also, if you have allergies, they may be acting up A LOT right now. Additionally, the heat and humidity index just skyrocketed, which affects breathing. But again, I have no experience with asthma....

I'm not a doctor, but based on what my asthma feels like, yours doesn't sound like it's asthma. Symptoms don't typically go away without treatment and there shouldn't be pain in your chest. Asthma feels like you have a very heavy chest and are suffocating and cannot inhale or expel adequate air. Mine is pretty bad though so maybe someone with lesser symptoms may tell you that you have early onset of asthma.

If you're really concerned or it continues to bother you, you should go see a specialist so your lung function/capacity can be tested. It's a harmless blow in a tube test.

For me when I have issues it feels like what I like to describe as trying to breath through a straw. Very labored breathing...it's awful!

I'm going thru something similar right now.  About 4 weeks ago started to get out of breath on exercise, then went to being out of breath at rest.  Docs thought it was bronchitis, but it came back after meds.  Ruling out cardio stuff, going to a pulmonologist next week.  Could be asthma, could be post viral bronchial issues.

My symptoms were gnerally shortness of breath (that has gone away) but also not being able to get a full inhale.  I can get a satsifying inhale about 30-40% of the time.  The rest just feels like I can only get so far before there's no more room

Really no way to know without seeing a doc

jsnowash,  I'll tell you what I think, but you should go see a Doctor to ask about that.  But they'll almost always give you an inhalor and send you away.

My .02, it could be Exercise and Allergy Induced Asthma.  I had problems with it all through high school in Maryland (near PA) but when I got to college in South Carolina, I didn't have it anymore.  Haven't had a problem since I moved out of MD really.

If that's not enough proof for you, I had a Marine in my Company who used to used to max the PFT (running <17 min 3 miles).  When he moved from CA to SC , he had an asthma attack during a run at Drill instructor School and found out he has allergies to whatever's in SC.

One more, I was walking into the Field Hospital in the field in the middle of Spain to get some Vitamin M (Motrin) and there was a kid heaving while sitting in a chair.  I asked him what was wrong and he said he couldn't breathe.  I got the docs and they took care of him and later found out he was "allergic to Spain."  When he got home, he was fine and served in Iraq twice after that.

I'm not saying that's definitely what's up with you, but if it's seasonal or if you're running somewhere different than you normally used to, or if the pool changed brands of chlorine, you may have some type of allergy.  Again, see a doctor.

Air Quality Alert warning today in Philadelphia.   Does that stretch to Wallingford?  I've had something similar recently and am starting to wonder if it's the air....

Yep. I got diagnosed with EIB (Btw, that's the "new" term, exercised induced bronchospasm, I guess asthma just didn't have enough syllables) last year. Asymptomatic most of the time, but in very intense heat (What am I doing in Phoenix again?) I get the feeling like I can't quite breathe deep, and I have a non productive cough after exercise.

I'm on a daily pill (That I'm pretty convinced isn't really doing a danged thing) and a pre exercise inhaler (Which I am convinced is doing EVERYthing.)

See a doc, especially since I never had any chest pain associated with it.

I've had sports induced asthma since I was in high school.  It feels exactly like you are describing- like your lungs are squeezed to the point where you cannot take a full breath.  Often, it rears its ugly head when it's cold or when I exert myself a little too much.

Happened to me at the end of my first tri last weekend when I pushed really hard to sprint through the finish. I couldn't catch my breath for about 5 min.   I also haven't used my inhaler in years and that probably would have resolved the issue.  Just one pump before a workout and I am fine.

Go to your doctor, use a flow meter and have them determine if you have it.  Good luck and take slow deep breaths in the meantime!

Same here - mine is much worse when it's cold out.  I could get away with not using my inhaler for swimming or biking, or even running for much of the year. But if I don't use it in the winter for running I can have that nagging cough for weeks.

Yup....sounds like it. I have recently developed asthma.....had my first episode about a year ago..........and I am learning to recognize the triggers that cause it to flare. Go and see about it but be forewarned......EIA can be difficult to diagnose with regular Pulmonary Function testing. All the tests I had came out negative for asthma and just showed super duper lung capacity. Because I was never having  "flare" during the tests. But asthmatic I am..........

Mild asthma does go away on its own after a while, at least for me, just by lowering my intensity of exercise.

Asthma is the contracting and narrowing of your air passage, resulting in lack of oxygen.  There were times that I had a mild asthma (allergy-triggered) and I don't have my inhaler with me.  I would sit down, relax, try to deep breathe in a rhythmic manner, almost like meditation, and it would go away.

Lack of fitness also contributed to my exercise-induce asthma.  When I first started running, 13 min/mile was my limit.  Tried to run faster and I would be wheezing.  Took me a few years to get up to my current speed which is ~10 min/mile.

Cold also triggers asthma.  Now that I have lived in New England for many years, I have developed the tolerance of being able to run at freezing temperature on a calm day.  But can't take it on the bike at 40°-ish or below, due to the wind chill effect.

grab a straw, close your mouth tight around it, and try to breathe through it for a minute. Asthma will feel like that.

So how DID they diagnose it? Did you do flow-meter testing following some kind of stress test?

For me...my asthma feels like a 100lb weight sitting on my lungs.  Although, the "breathing through a straw" analogy is definitely spot-on!  It's been a long time since I've had an acute attack, but when it did happen, it was usually at night while I was sleeping.  It felt like I was suffocating, couldn't get enough air expelled, wheezing like crazy, panic would set in and I would often start to hyperventilate.  At that point, the only thing that would help calm my breathing down (besides my rescue inhaler, of course) was to sit up on the side of the bed and drop my head between my knees and focus on taking very slow and deliberate breaths.

Been asthmatic all of my life (Exercise and Allergy induced).  IMHO if the symptoms go away when you slow things down it isn't asthma as I know it.  Once an attack hits me I either have to use an inhaler or stop and wait (caffiene helps).  You may be pushing your limit or have very mild exercise induced that just goes away easily.  I would get checked out by a Dr and they can do some Spirometry on you.

I had similar feelings, get yourself checked out for allergies and asthma...mine was allergies..windpipe was inflamed. I am on a tab a day to keep it in check but my performance has rocketed because I can breathe now.

I was diagnosed with Exercise AND Allergy Induced asthma about two months ago, and I had VERY VERY similar symptoms.

Here were my symptoms, in order of noticeability:

1) When I pushed really really hard, I would get pain in my lungs when I tried to breathe deep. To me, it feels like when you try to breathe when it's really really cold outside (you know that burning type of pain?) Of course, it was 80 degrees outside, so there was no explanation. After one really really hard bike workout, it lasted for 2 days after the workout - where I couldn't get a full, deep breath without that pain.

2) Coughing. Soon after a hard workout (usually a bike workout outside, but really - any hard workout will do), I would start coughing. Hard. Once, I was talking to my mom on the phone shortly after a workout, and she was really worried that I was going to crash my car, I was coughing so much. I cough pretty much consistently after any workout I do where I forget to use an inhaler. I've been running for years, so I didn't think that conditioning really explained it.

3) Most recently (and disturbingly) - I've done two road races where I've forgotten to use my inhaler, and I've had mini-attacks, that freaked the hell out of me. Basically, I'd forget to use my inhaler, start the race off FAST, and not be able to catch my breath, and I'd feel wheezing when I did. Both times this happened, I had to stop and walk and try to catch my breath. Did not feel good.

Anyway, I've been given an inhaler - and as long as I remember to use it, it does seem to help a ton! I would go talk to your doctor and see what's up.

If you think back - have your symptoms been going on longer than you realize?  I ask this, because now that I have the diagnosis (and access to an inhaler), I realize that I've had some of the symptoms (particularly the coughing and the pain in the chest) for a while. They just became noticeable when I changed my exercise routine, i.e. became involved in tri. Before this year, I concentrated mostly on running, and I would get these symptoms after running outside or after a track workout.  I thought everyone had pain in the chest after running hard! After introducing biking, I really realized that something was a-miss. My 'engine' - though good - was really inhibiting my abilities.

Hmmm
You all have me thinking, I have an issue that I have had for as long as I have been doing tris(5years). Coming off the bike I feel like I can't completely fill my lungs. My HR is low (130ish) but loboring breaths. Takes a mile or two for the breathing to calm down. But even then Still not full, but less gasping if that makes sense. I tend to rely on power on the bike, make lots but low cadence. During swim, long efficent strides. With neither the swim or bike I have a prob. But kinda think with those two I rely on power, yet on the run breathing is an issue. Also my swim/bike is probably in the upper 10% as far as speed goes. My run is in the lower 10%. Does all this make sense?????
