Technical, it isn't, really, with one exception (see below).  The descents are all more or less straight.  There are a couple right-angle turns at intersections that can catch you napping...there were volunteers at them last year.  Only two significant hills (Canyon Rd. and Chalk Hill), neither of them killers.  Lots of rollers in first half of course, though, so it's easy to burn too much energy.

There is one hazardous spot and it is right away heading north out of Guerneville:  There is a quick right turn onto a very short, steep, drop which leads to an immediate sharp left that takes you to an undercrossing.  Very, very, easy to end up in the bushes on that hard left turn.  Lots of volunteers there to warn you, but it is worth taking a look at before the race.

Here is a video of part of the course (Part of Dry Creek Rd.) but will give you a good feel for the type of roads you'll see. Part of video is shot on W. Dry Creek Road which is pretty similar to Westside Rd. on the Vineman course. The video doesn't show Chalk Hill or Canyon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOwVQDsmqYU also check out www.winecountrytimetrial.com for the actual map.

I would only call the first part of Westside road "technical" as there are some rough patches, no shoulder, rollers and very curvy. Like the other poster said, the turn off from River Rd to Westside is a little tricky so just slow down. Canyon Rd is a long, fairly steep grade and seems to go on for a while. If you aren't a good climber, just get in a easy gear and take your time. Once you get to the top, it's screaming downhill (very straight) until you get to the intersection of Hwy 128, it's pretty flat from there until you turn off from 128 onto Chalk Hill Rd. More rollers and then the infamous Chalk Hill climb. Once you get to the top, you'll be able to bomb down Chalk Hill Rd but be on the lookout for a 90 degree turn onto Faught Rd (up hill). Trust me, get in the right gear before you turn onto Faught. I can't tell you how many dropped chains I saw at that intersection last year (10 or 12 I bet). Faught Rd is a bumpy-lumpy road. After that, it is flat all the way to Windsor HS. Parts of Shiloh near 101 aren't that great either, gravel and some cracks here and there.

This is not a "put your head down and hammer" course. You will have to be aware of the road, road conditions and other people on the race course. I'm not a great climber so Chalk Hill is not to be taken lightly.

Comments on Faught are spot on.
