New user ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone i just wanted some advice. I've been on and off with the p90x workouts. I use them for strength training, i only do the actual weight lifting segments not the plyo vids or anything like that. I just don't really have time to fit all of the workouts in with my current training, working, and going to school. My question is for those of you who use p90x - do you find benefit doing the extra stuff beyond the weight lifting segments? Does anyone have a list of the workouts used in these videos? they tend to run so long with all the talking that on nights when i have class and need to get a 6 mile run in on top of that i simply can't fit it in. |

Besides that, the kenpo isn't necessary if you're getting plenty of cardio which it seems like you are. The yoga couldn't hurt, but there are videos out there with more tri-related yoga that are generally shorter workouts. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use the ab video and the stretch video, for any strength training, I have a book I use called "Strength Training for Triathletes" (by Patrick Hagerman). Crazy I know. It is pretty basic, but has lots of exercises for each event. |

All together now, "One-legged wall sits, fifteen seconds each for 90 seconds total!" Also I think Core Synergistics is a killer. As far as realizing a benefit from them, I've only been at it for a week and I'm not presently in full tri training mode, so that has yet to be determined. But it is a fun new challenge! |

I loved it, lots of guys from work were doing it and bailing on the Yoga adn stretching, but I saw huge jumps in core strength with those. The yoga is awesome for flexability, whichhas helped in injury prevention for me and has my golf swing looking sweeter than ever. My wife just made the comment tonight that she didn't really care for the yoga workout, but that it took away ALL her soreness! I was kinda "meh" about it. Tons of hamstring stretching, so they were sore the next day. Get back into it Bear! Do you have a handle on BeachBody.com? |

I spend 5-8 hrs a day in a cockpit where it is inconvient/ impossible to eat anything other than a bar in-between flights |

For example, if your really motivated, you can find exercises that work the same muscles, and even some of the same moves, and do it yourself. You can log everything yourself. Personally, while I do have the dvds, the trouble comes in with posture. A dvd wont/cant truly correct you from doing something the wrong way, it can help though. I think the money would be better spent at the YMCA, because like the videos, it really comes down to using it. You can get fit without a dvd series, even without a membership to a gym, it takes self motivation. Currently, I only use a couple dvds for strength training and flexibility. I like to add them into my schedule, but didnt need the entire p90x series. I hope this helps, its kind of back and forth on the subject. |

It's a lot of extra planning, but it keeps her feeling better - and away from the cheese and ice-cream from first class. Can pilots bring food into the cockpit? If not, man - that's tough! |

I've been going at it 2 weeks now [took the past few days off to rest up for a tri yesterday] and I love it! It's packed with stuff that I wouldn't even think of to do in a workout and it actually looks like a high-quality product. The fact that I can pop in the next DVD and push play and not have to think about what I'm doing is a huge thing for me (probably because I don't like to think too much!). I'm not concerned about bulking up either and Tony says in the videos repeatedly, "Do 8 to 10 for size, do 12 to 15 for lean." He also keeps repeating "Modify if you can't do it the way we're doing it" and gives you different options for the same exercise to make it easier or harder. I think it's a very good quality product and requires very little additional equipment in order to use [we have the pull-up bar that fits into the doorway and the bands and we can do every exercise]. Again, that's what works for me, something else may work for you. Getting up and working out really is 3/4 the battle. What you do during the workout makes up the rest! |

I just did one now, still sweaty! it rocks. as for food in the cockpit, I'm instructing, and not much time/ no fridge, so I usually eat a cliff bar between hops and have my camelback hose from the back of my seat. I need to plan better. |

The one change I suggest, if you S/B/R is dropping the kenpo workout---(and sometimes plyo depending on how you feel) it can get to be a little much. I put my before and after pics on the p90x thread in the weight loss forum. I have mostly gotten rid of my moobs, I think another round will finish the job completely. |

I am planning on doing the Classic version as written after tri season with some additional running etc. Just curious as to how others balance it all with the tri stuff. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was following the tri-newbies 18 week half iron training plan http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_trainingprograms/tno_HIM.asp. I started the S/B/R training about 3 weeks before the p90x round. It was a lot--especially on a reduced calorie diet. I ended up taking out kenpo entirely and then I stopped doing plyo about halfway through--my legs would just be too burnt. Plus near the end of the program I went down to two swims a week (time considerations). I just started round 2 yesterday and I'm going to keep doing the same volume of training in the trinewbies plan. I plan on trying to keep plyo in this time, but I may ditch it..i will not use kenpo. IMHO it is totally doable with a tri program, you just have to watch out for signs of overtraining and be prepared to back off if it gets too intense. |

I had wondered if it was worth getting or if it was just another useless exercise gimmick. I figure with fall coming up soon it will be a great workout to keep me motivated and in shape through the winter months. Thanks! |

I hate the workouts, but I still press play because the difference when you are done can be amazing. Can you do this on your own? Resounding YES!! , but will you? Chances are NO! At least with P90X or even Crossfit you wold have a following here as you do for doing Tri's that can help and motivate...THAT can be worth the price in it self. |
