Does your swim form change when you are sharing a lane?  This morning I was swimming alone and lost in the vast wilderness that is my mind when a woman asked if she could share a lane.  I smiled and said "sure" and kept swimming...but I immediately started hugging close to the buoys and became more conscience of my form so I didn't whack her in the head or accidently grab her arse with my flailing arms and legs.

So is lane sharing a good thing even if not as enjoyable since you can't veg out?

I definitely feel more cramp and constricted in my stroke and still manage to get a good whack in now and then.  They should post a warning on my lane...

One thing I do like about it is when swimming in the end lane, with lots of people, it can get a little choppy.

I find myself breathing to one side more, depending on my lane mate

I do focus more when someone else is in the lane. What used to really mess me up is when I know people are milling about outside the pool. Are they going to get in my lane? Are they expecting me to stop and invite them? Now I just ignore them. If they want to get in they'll get in and we'll work it out then.

I usually have to share a lane.  I do tend to lose form at times, and, even though I don't want to, I still accomplish taking a breath in at the same time the other swimmer comes towards me on their return, causing me to inhale some water from their wave.  I also smack my right first knuckle under the hard plastic lane "ropes" on the up stroke on my right side since I start hugging the line.  Dang that hurts.

yeah, I don't like sharing lanes. I like to think and get lost in my thoughts. Sharing my lane just has me worried I'll whack the other person! I remember running into someone in my lane last year, they hit me hard in the chest and it was very awkward to say the least.
