Subject: Supplements or Recovery Drinks
I wanted to ask about recovery drinks or supplements for training.  I am starting to push with my training and feel like I am not recovering like I should.  Any suggestions?  Any good protein or recovery supplements that are not for super body builders?  Any advise is always appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I am by no means an expert but I find good ole chocolate milk works for me after a hard workout.  I usually drink about 16 oz. of water right after I am done then 16 oz or so of low fat chocolate milk.

I like Endurox R4 the best. I have no scientific evidence to back this up, but I feel like my muscles recover faster when I take this after my hard or really long workouts.

I also use Boost (the old people stuff). That is more convenient to bring along to take after races or after workouts where it's not convenient to mix something with water.

I use Slim Fast High Protein.  Agree with Carol, easy to take to a workout, tastes good even not refrigerated.  15g of protein,  23g carbs, 13 of which are sugar, 200mg sodium, 550,g potassium.  And only 190 calories.  Vanilla and Chocolate are equally good.

9+ hours of sleep & skipping the alcohol are the first steps to good recovery for me.  And plenty of healthy food.  I don't think I've ever gotten into a situation that couldn't be remedied by those.

But maybe I don't train hard enough.

Are you already sleeping plenty?

dark beer.  don't listen to Tommy

seriously, I have endurlytes, but don't use them except after really long workouts.  Like Carol, I use the Walmart version of chocolate ensure for recovery.  Used to use the Infinit Recovery drink, but have been cutting corners budget wise.

Actually, Tommy is right on the 9 hours of sleep, I just can't figure out where to put it

I'm still new to the artificial nutrition thing so tend to go old-school with chocolate milk or milo (its like ovaltine, but different) as a recovery drink. If its a really long workout I'll do chocolate milk, regular milk and then some food. I find milk to be delicious after all the I drink on a long ride (accelerade is what I am taking now on the ride but not keen on this lemon-lime flavor...just 63 more servings to go though! I'll add some GU to that if needed). Anyway, I figure instead of more articifial "stuff" after a long workout, I'll just eat some real food. Kinda like Spots idea of the dark beer though too. Its all personal choice in the end...

Chocolate milk is an awesome recovery drink, but unless you are riding or running from home, its not always practical.  Your refueling window for recovery is 30 minutes.   So unless you want to pack a cooler its nice to have something that is shelf stable and doesn't need refrigeration.

I also use Sportlegs during, and Recover-Ease afterwards with hard training efforts.

Thanks for the info, and as far as the 9 hours of sleep, can we break that up, I am lucky to get 7/night.
Trying the milk idea and hope it works as good as it tastes.
