Subject: How long before I buy a new pair of running shoes?
Hi All.

Just a quickie.  My run shoes at the moment are looking pretty decent, but I'm sure some time ago i read somewhere that after x-amount of miles you ought to change them as the padding becomes damaged.  Can any of you enlighten me on approx how far this would be?  I mostly treadmill run, as i'm new to triathlon (1st one is madza london sprint tri in two weeks - eek!), but noticed after a run the other day that my ankles felt pretty weak.  However, this could also have been down to the fact that i have been unable to train properly for a few months due to ia back injury, and after only a week back in training i went up to my furthest distance for only the second time ever!

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

We had a podiatrist come speak at our running group the other day. He said about 300 miles and they should be retired from running but can be used as casual footwear.

Yep, about 300.  I've stretched it out to 350 a couple of times, but the knees were not happy.

I'm getting about 500 or so out of mine.  Different shoes, different strides, different bodies, etc. means there's a range of appropriate mileage from a pair of shoes.

I retire mine at 500 miles. But I weigh 140 and have a pretty light foot strike. YMMV.

I'd also recommend using 2-3 pairs at once. Different brands too. I feel like it causes less wear and tear on the body.

I do the two pair thing too. Just be careful and don't do what I just did..bring two right shoes to a tri and no left ones! I think I will go for different colors next time.

I don't keep track of the miles on my shoes because it will vary with the surface that I'm running on. During the winter, when I'm mostly on the treadmill, the shoes will last longer than when I'm running outside on the road. I replace any shoes as soon as my knees start to get cranky.

You can't go by how the shoes look. The midsole will break down long before the outer, visible part. That's why it's recommended to replace them after a certain mileage.

<300 to >500.  It really depends on your running style and the shoes.  300 miles is probably a safe bet but you might be able to be able to get more.

I replace shoes between 175-300 miles, depending on wear.  Not surprisingly, I tend to blow through the lightweight trainers a lot quicker.

Body weight is also a factor isn't it?

I've always heard 300-500.  I can usually get just over 400 when I start to notice a difference, and usually replace them then.  For reference, I wear the Aciscs GT-21x0 series, and am a 170-175 lb male.
