Subject: Can't find a HIM??

I’m going to be doing my 1st IM in May 2010 (St George) and would really like to hit a HIM sometime in January or February (halfway through my 30 week training program). I live in Las Vegas and have crawled through the web trying to find something in North America and have had no luck. Anybody have any suggestions?
Worse case scenario, I will head to St George for the day and do my own HIM on the IM course (both bike and run are 2 loops) but I would obviously rather have the support of the race.....

There really aren't any then (which shouldn't be surprising, since for most of North America, that's the dead of winter and no one is in racing condition...even here in So Cal, that's the rainiest time of year and not conducive to going long).  Earliest you'll find are late March/early April.

I am doing the same (IM St George) and looked into a HIM as well. Oceanside 70.3 is a little too close for me. Instead I found some smaller races, doing the Las Vegas Triathlon in sept, i found a few century rides and marathons in the meantime.

Let me know if you go out to Utah, maybe we could put a BT group together and make our HIM.

Full on winter, even in So Cal/desert not going to find a HIM.  If you do, post it here because I've never heard of one

BTW, you don't need to do a HIM pre IM.   If it's for the race experience, you obviously won't get that on your own.  If its for a long workout, I am not sure how beneficial a 1.2/56/13.1 training day is for an IM (personally I don't think it's of much benefit, but not a coach...

Thanks for the heads up. My training has a HIM in it (30 week plan), so I was just trying to follow the book. Typical type-A personality I want to do it all perfect and then some, lol. I have several OLY and sprints planned along the way (plus the Vegas marathon), so I'm sure I'll be fine without. Thanks again for the advice......

I will defiantly make several training trips out there (only 2 hr drive for me), have another buddy who I'm training with, so if you ever feel the need to shoot down there for a weekend and want some ridding or running company give us a holler....

Is the plan beIronFit? That is 30 weeks and has an HIM in it too. In that plan, one of the purposes of the HIM is to test your nutrition plan. If you can't find a real race, I think you should try to do it yourself and "race" it. Your stomach will process your food differently at race intensity vs a typical training pace. There are fitness gains to be made during the race also.
