Coming off of a stress fracture, my next scheduled race is right at the end of my "no-run" period (swimming and biking has been OK).  I should mention that the race is a sprint and not too far from home (low inconvenience factor to attend, but also low cost to skip).  Would you . . .

(I missed the "not" first time around . . . slight difference)

Would there be an "aquabike" category?
Some longer distance tri may have that as an option - allowing you to turn in the chips at T2 and be done.  Of course you have to register as "aquabike'.
I did one the past Sunday.

I don't think it's a good idea to use a race as a reintroduction to running after an injury.  With all the excitement and adrenaline, you might not pull back even if your body is telling you it's not ready.  You should ease back in to running.  You don't want to re-injure yourself and blow your next chance to race.

I voted swim - bike - walk the whole thing.  You're an adult, you can manage it if you really want to.  Maybe make a t-shirt for the run that says on the back "If you see me running, remind me to stop.  No excuses."  or "I'm walking on purpose, leave me alone".

I voted skip it entirely...the temptation to "accidentally" keep going for the run (especially at the tail end of a sfx, when you FEEL fine and recovered) is awfully high. And I just prefer to avoid temptation whenevr possible.

Define: right at the end.

Personally, I'm the kinda guy that goes to a race to race.  I'd either run the run portion or not do the race at all.  My decision would be based on just how close I was to being cleared by the docs.

ETA:  A stress fracture isn't really something you want to mess around with.  A single day can ruin months of rehab.

By "right at the end of my no-run period," do you mean that the sprint occurs just when you're allowed to start running again? If that's the case, I say skip the race. Are you really going to be happy just walking the run portion? Will you really be able to stick to your plan of just walking (or limited running)?

Best wishes in whatever you decide. Did you aquajog at all throughout your injury? If not, it's a great running supplement if you have access to a pool that's deep enough. You might even want to use it as you start to build up your running again.

6 weeks of no running.  Race is at 5 1/2 weeks.  I don't intend to run, btw, but I've talked to people whose responses have ranged from "I'd skip it" to "I'd probably wind up running if I felt OK" and was curious to poll the BTers.

I have ran injured only to prolong the injury.  I ran the race only because I was already out the money.  Would I recommend it?  No, but I have done it.

It is hard to show up for a race and treat it like a training run.  I always wind up pushing at some point.

I say just swim and bike.

IF you start the run, you WILL be tempted to RUN. If you are not supposed to run... and you do.. you could injure yourself more. Which would suck.

I voted for swim, bike and walk the run if you have to do it at all. Last year, I was just starting to run following an injury. My favorite hometown sprint race took place at that time. I opted to volunteer and not race because I wouldn't really enjoy it knowing I couldn't really race it. Whatever your choice, please don't run. It would be terrible to have another 5 and a half weeks of no running because you couldn't control yourself during one little sprint.

How badly do you want to do this race, and for what reasons?

If you a) want to do the race because you are aching to compete, I would not do the race at all, or like others have said, just swim and bike (but make sure that there are people there who will stop you from running incase you decide you 'feel ok'.)

If you b) are the type of person (or are truly at this mentality at this point) who races because you love racing for the sheer enjoyment of the atmosphere, swimming, biking, running, endorphines - the general experience, I would definitely say do the swim and the bike, but don't run.

If you are b) and love the feeling of finishing a race (or it would bother you if you didn't finish) and you have decided for certain that you are 100% fine with walking, then I would say go ahead and walk the run. BUT I would make sure you have friends there who can verbally remind you in the case that you end up feeling good and think '3 miles won't hurt.'

Remember, this is only one race. If you aggravate the injury, it could cost you potentially a season. Heal well!

personally, and i have been there, i would go do the swim/bike and drop out.

i like to race, and i am not going to blow my whole season if i can get some racing in. i'll go do the siwm/bike, see how my times are, and call it a day, (no i would not walk the run).

use the swim/bike to see where fitness is, and then be man enough to walk away after that. if its close and cheap, is there any reason not to get that part in?

I've done several team triathlons where the promoter let me do a team where I swam and biked and then turned over to a runner.  It put me at a disadvantage since I had to change into my bike gear where the other teams did not have much of a transition.

Go and volunteer at the race or just cheer on your friends that are racing.   I've been injured since last fall and my racing has been limited to swim/bike and some shorter (slow) runs.  Volunteering is fun but so is hanging out and cheering for everyone.  : )

I like the recommendations to not even bring running shoes . . . you are clearly attuned to my state of mind.  Thanks for the feedback.

I've had a tibial stress fracture, but I think for any s-f you would ant to err on the side of caution - that is, take an extra week, just to be sure. You'd really hate yourself if you spent 5.5 weeks recovering and then blew it all on one race.

If there is an official Aquabike to it (unlikley in a sprint), do that. Otherwise, do the swim and bike, and then drop out. A torn meniscus in '06 left me in that boat, as that was back when aquabikes were few and far between. As a runner first and foremost, I found those very tough to do, heading back to T2 and watching others head off on thier run, but at least it kept my competitive juices flowing.

Interstingly, I'm in a similar boat. A crash on June 13 left me with a separated shoulder -- no swimming for 6-8 weeks. I've done two duathlons since then, but the Big Decision is coming up - NYC triathlon next Sunday, which is 6 weeks 1 day from the crash. If my doctor clears me for swimming when I see him in an hour, what do I do -- head down nd hope the strong current in the Hudson will make 1500 meters tolerable, or bail on the race, eat the $225, and make sure my shoulder is ready for serious racing in August, September, and October. I'm thinking of bailing on NYCT, just because I'd hate to blow the reest of the season. And so if I were you, I would notnotNOT think about doing the run portion of your upcoming race!

Heal well and fully!

I have done a few team events. You can do the swim and bike portion and have someone else finish the run.
