I just found out the pool at my gym is being closed for renovations until August 24th.  My tri is Aug. 23rd!!!

I have a pool at my apartment, but 1) it's an apartment pool (shared by about 3000 people (families/kids/everyone) with only 2 lanes - rest just for "fun") and 2) it's only open 11-9 (I work two jobs, so I'm never home at this time)

now I'm gonna have to pay for a pool...if I can find one I can get to!

...as if I didn't have enough time to train already....

lol

I should also mention that I don't have a car, so it makes getting to other pools more difficult.

Guess I'll be biking to/from the pool!  good block training, right??

I am in a similar situation!  I started training in June for my first sprint on July 19th......this Sunday!  Starting from scratch on the swim.  I found a gym that I could swim at over lunch, pretty much the only time available.  The pool has been closed for repairs for the last few weeks just as my triathlon is approaching.  Add to that a vacation and I'm a bit worried about my OWS coming up!  Good luck!

Maybe because there are many more outdoor pools open in the summer and the indoor ones are the only ones open during the winter?  (I have no idea - just a guess)

I don't know where you live, but LA Fitness has a reasonable rate and they almost always have a 3 lane 25M pool.  Give it a look.  I had to go through similar stuff.  The AM swim group was changed from being anyone $2 per visit to now being $40 per month for Masters Swim Team and $2 per visit.  After I heard that, I joined LA Fitness.

YMCA is another option.

Go out to the frigg'n lake!  It's warm out for Pete's sake.  Why do people need to swim at an indoor pool in the middle of summer?

Stupid would be doing a reno in the middle of winter where indoor swimming is the only option.

I was just talking to a friend yesterday, apparently the YMCA's in this area (DC) are $90/month!!!!  I don't know if they have a 'per pool use' charge.

I talked to a friend who said there is a community pool about a mile from work that's only $5.  I'm gonna try biking there (which means I have to bike to work) next week during lunch...

lol - I live in Washington DC - the only "lake" is the Potomac - and if you've ever seen it, you wouldn't swim in it either!

I choose to swim in an indoor pool year round because 1)  It's cheaper (25% of the cost of swimming at a lake), 2)  It's 2 miles instead of 10 miles away, 3)  It's open for lap swimming 5:30-7:30AM M-F instead of 6-7PM Wednesday.  The next-closest lakes are 20 and 36 miles respectively (the closest one just became available to us this summer).

A. lakes are not always easy to access or are far away...B. when you live in Arizona with 115 degree heat the outdoor pool is too hot, you must stop frequently and get OUT of the water to cool off, screws up your workout.

C. There are few options of lakes to swim in.  All lakes in the greater DC area have swimming restrictions.  The place where I did my first OW swim clinic only allows swimming in it during the swim clinic/during races.

speaking for the OP, there are a few places to train in OW, but without a car it can get difficult.

The gym should give you the next month for free since the primary reason you have it is the pool, take the money and see if you can find a YMCA and perhaps get a 1 month membership or pay the day rate to get in and swim. I don't understand how these gyms just announce lenghty pool closures at the last minute? If it closes for a day or something I understand but a month? They must know about that well ahead of time....

Do any local schools/colleges have pools you could use?

My local HS has public swim sessions, and my Y also has an agreement with its closest HS so that when the Y closes for its annual maintenance, lap swim sessions get moved there instead.

I feel for you, I really do.  I have a car, but me getting to a pool is a real effort.. like an hours worth of driving.  I have a pool in my HOA club house, but it is closed indefinitely as the ceiling is falling in.  Good luck in your pool search.

Hey, rb, I'm in Arlington.  Don't know how outrageous a suggestion this is for you, but the newly opened W-L pool is not that far from the Ballston metro.  Opens at 5:30am.

I read a recent article about a new federal regulation about a new type of drain in pools that keep kids form getting stuck in them. It said that alot of  pools across the county haven't changed to the new drain. That could be why it is closed.

Here in Toronto the city went on strike - all public pools have been closed - indoor and outdoor.  The Toronto Island Triathlon is in August on the islands but the city runs the ferry service to the island so....?   You can't really ponder it too much because the stench of garbage in the streets is too distracting!  Wanna come visit?? Laughing

I feel your pain!  The Y pools here have goofy hours for us working people, so I've had to try 4 different locations just to get in a swim after work.  I was using the neighborhood pool, but kids were there as late a 9 pm, so I spent most of my time dodging them instead of really swimming.  Good luck on finding an alternative!

Hey! I'm also in the DC area and have struggled with researching pools in the area. All Washington DC community pools are free for DC residents or $4 per use for VA/MD/Other folks. I ride my bike to the Francis pool at N and 25NW after work and it gets the job done.

The Hains Point pool is also included in this deal. I haven't been there yet, but am planning on going this weekend.

I actually live in Arlington, so I'm planning on checking out the Washington-Lee pool in Ballston (which someone else mentioned was just renovated) once the outdoor pools close.

Hope one of these things works out for you!
