We all see the threads in here about proper race nutrition, what to eat before a race, how to fuel etc...

All with good information. However after my run last night I started thinking what food have you had experiences with eating prior to working out that might have had a not so good effect...

For me last night we had a rice noodle, veggie and Thai Peanut sauce stir fry that my wife made for dinner, 2 hours later I went for a run and I definately regretted it...did not throw up by my stomach was trying to flip flop and tie itself into a pretzel all at the same time for most of the run.

I have also had a bad experience from a cheese Quesadilla with a medium-hot salsa on it. (I usually stick with a mild extremely flavorful Salsa Fresca.)

What else should we avoid?

Rich and/or spicy foods.

I love both a lot, but I have learned my lesson doing it within 10 hours or so of a long workout/race.

Burger King.  The night before a long run - with a Raisin Bran breakfast.  Just a bad idea all together...

I had a terrible run experience once, involving a BBQ burger, Jalapeno Poppers, and beer a few hours prior.

Another terrible thing to eat before working out is Lo Mein.

Beef and bean burritos with habanero salsa didn't sit too well, either...

Can you tell that occasionally I am impulsive and do not plan ahead well?

That's like loading a cannon and using too much gunpowder. Explosive, yes. Good idea, no.

Chocolate before a long workout has always bothered me - terrible bloating and cramps.  During is not as bad, say in a protein bar during an extended bike ride, but before is terrible for me and several of my friends.

Cauliflower.  I did that once and kept burping throughout my workout.  Cauliflower is not as tasty in gaseous form the 2nd, 3rd....... time around!

I have yet to find a food that I can't eat, in reasonable quantities, pretty much right up until my workout.

Iron stomach, I guess.

But I'll keep looking. promise.

Philly cheese steak. Since then I'm really careful. You only make that mistake once.

I pretty much have an iron gut.  I've never had a problem with any food.

The only time I've felt bad during a workout because of what I consumed was when I had 3 pints at happy hour, then went for a run.  Definitely felt bloated and uncomfortable.

Tequilla, Caronas, beef and bean burrittos with sour cream......
On the night before the North Shore Cyclist Blazing Saddles Century.

Fuzzy head.
Gurgling stomach.
The smells emitting from my body.
Dear God, why did I do this to myself??!!!
My saddle was blazing.
It was not a pretty sight.

Eating anything, except maybe a gel or small banana, up to an hour or so before I run I usually have problems, either gastric or a side-stitch.  I try to plan better.

I've had trouble with cheesy meals a couple of times. I will not eat anything with cheese and limit my dairy the day before a race or a long run. Apparently I've had more trouble with food on runs more than the other two disciplines.

Tuna kills me for some reason if I eat it before a workout. I get heartburn and belching so bad that I'm miserable. I haven't noticed any other foods that bother me.

The hot dogs I ate for lunch the other day kept trying to come out the wrong way at my bike workout that night. I should've just let 'em exit.

Papa Murphys Chicago pizza 1 hour before a run in 90 degree heat was a poor decision, for sure!
