Subject: New and confused
Hey alll,
I'm new here. Hi!! I just did my first tri last Sunday. I had a blast and definitely want to do more. I'm thinking about doing another little spring in a couple of weeks and then I'm planning for a half-marathon in November.

The confusion I have seems common: what bike to buy! I have been borrowing an entry level road bike from a friend for the past several months. It was okay. There were several things I didn't like about it but I thought I'd keep riding it for a while until I really figured out what I wanted in a bike. Then my friend did the unthinkable--she asked for her bike back! So now I'm in a quandary. I'm still really new to all of this and I have to question how serious I'm going to be, how many races I'll do, etc. Do I want a road bike or a tri bike? I don't want to drop $1000-$1500 on a lower end bike now only to find a year from now that I want something better and different but I also don't want to spend more and realize I've bought the wrong thing. I'm so confused! How did you all come to the decisions you made?

TIA!
Ann

I went for the used entry level road bike.  If you are of average size you can find lots of slightly used bikes on Ebay and Craigslist for sale in the sub 1K range with decent components.  The bike I bought I will be able to resell next year if I so choose and likely get all of my money back or close to it.  I put my own spd type pedals on it from my mountain bike and will add clip-on aero bars.  Good luck.

Well, i can't help you too much with your decision but I can share what I did.  I knew I wanted to tri but I hadn't had a bike since I was in my early teens and I don't think i'd really even ridden one since then.  My boyfriend is a triathlete and he suggested a roadbike because I could later put aerobars on it and even if i wasn't into tris I could use it for general riding.  We went to an end of season bike sale and I bought a previous year's model Trek road bike for $900 (originally $1600). It was alot for me to put out not really knowing how it would all pan out but I did know that at the very least i would be able to ride it for fun given that DBF already rides ... should last me at least a few years before I decide I need to upgrade. I love my bike!

Welcome to this sport, and congratulations on finishing your first tri.

If you're the kind of person who'll buy something and use it, and use it, and use it, you can do pretty well buying a bike in the price range you list.  Buy a bike

If you're the kind who's always buying, upgrading, upgrading, buy a bike.  You're going to upgrade in a year whether it's a $1200 bike or a $2200 bike and you'll want to upgrade even if it's a $3000 bike.

Buying a used bike is OK if you know what you're looking for (specifically size) and are reasonably competent with a set of tools.  Keep in mind that a new bike comes with a warranty and the LBS should set it up so it fits you reasonably well (maybe not a full-fledged fit, but at least 10-15 minutes of eyeball-based adjustments) and cable/brake adjustments after it's broken in.

I have been doing Tris for 2 years now.  Originally on my 1988 heavy road bike with clips on the pedals wearing my running shoes. Did a sprint and an Oly distance with that bike.

I decided I loved tris and wanted to be able to have a shot at not getting dropped by the stud bike group that my husband and son ride with every week.  So... spent about $1000 on an older model road bike.  Got clipless pedals and bike shoes....rode on my trainer a lot over the winter and it made a HUGE difference.  I have added aero bars, and did and oly and half ironman last summer.  This summer am training for another HIM and for me personally I feel like I don't need any upgrade on this bike.

I don't feel the need for a tri bike because I ride with a group so often, and although I am competitive in my ag it is not like I am looking to go pro or anything.  I think we sometimes get caught up in the equipment, when what we really need to get better is to work at good technique and training.

Thank for the perspective! I think I'll probably lean towards a customizable road bike with some aero-bars thrown on. We'll see. I still need to go get fitted and I'll probably ride many many bikes around over the next couple of weeks. It's just a shame to be without a bike right now since it's prime weather for riding here in San Diego!

this article (http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/bikes/difference.shtml
has been tossed around quite a bit on BT.  it helped me make my decision.  i only ride to train and race so i opted for the used tri bike.  spending less money on the bike allows for more upgrades if you like to customize like you said.

look on BT's classifieds and slowtwitch's classified if you're going to used route...
